Total antioxidant capacity-Relevance, methods and clinical implications

Sajal Gupta et al.

Summary: Oxidative stress is prevented by antioxidants, which are crucial for sperm health. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) can aid in diagnosing male infertility, as infertile patients tend to have lower TAC levels. There is a positive correlation between TAC and seminal parameters, and evaluating TAC along with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and sperm DNA fragmentation index (DFI) may improve the accuracy of diagnosing male infertility.

Detrimental effects of long-term exposure to heavy metals on histology, size and trace elements of testes and sperm parameters in Kermani Sheep

Amir Hassan Heidari et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of long-term exposure to high levels of environmental heavy metals on testicular characteristics in Kermani rams, suggesting a positive correlation between lead, cadmium, chromium, and nickel contents in the testis with sperm abnormalities. Long-term exposure to heavy metals may contribute to decreased fertility in rams.

The effect of iron and/or zinc diet supplementation and termination of this practice on the antioxidant status of the reproductive tissues and sperm viability in rats

Dawid Madej et al.

Summary: Iron and zinc supplementation together can enhance antioxidant enzyme activity in the male reproductive system, reduce oxidative damage levels, and improve sperm viability. After stopping the supplementation, there was a decrease in antioxidant enzyme activity in the testes and epididymis, and an increase in oxidative damage in the prostate.
