Impact of Amerind ancestry and FADS genetic variation on omega-3 deficiency and cardiometabolic traits in Hispanic populations

Chaojie Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals a strong negative association between Amerind genetic ancestry and LC-PUFA levels, particularly low levels of n-3 LC-PUFAs. The single nucleotide polymorphism rs174537 on the FADS gene plays a significant role in influencing LC-PUFA levels, especially for n-3 LC-PUFAs at low levels.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the FADS1 genotype modifies the response to high PUFA diets, especially to high-LA diet. Considering FADS variation in personalized dietary counseling may be beneficial for individuals.

Summary: The study found that higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood are associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality, particularly with long chain omega-3 fatty acids. This association may help reduce the risk of death from cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other causes.
