Enzymes as useful biomarkers to assess the response of freshwater communities to pesticide exposure-A review

Ana M. M. Goncalves et al.

Summary: The lack of specificity of pesticides can harm non-target organisms through oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation, and biomembrane integrity compromise. Organophosphorus pesticides, carbamates, and organochlorine pesticides have different levels of persistence and broad-spectrum actions, posing potential threats to non-target species. Enzymes as biomarkers have proven effective in assessing freshwater communities' response to pesticide exposure, although organisms' sensitivity and responses to pollutants may vary under different conditions. Further studies on enzyme biomarkers could provide valuable information to overcome limitations in assessing the impact of pesticides on non-target individuals.

The Sulfoximine Insecticide Sulfoxaflor and Its Photodegradate Demonstrate Acute Toxicity to the Nontarget Invertebrate Species Daphnia magna

Jeremy R. Gauthier et al.

Summary: The new sulfoximine insecticide sulfoxaflor could undergo degradation and transformation in soils and sediments, with potential impacts on aquatic organisms. Its photolytic half-life in surface waters may be too long to mitigate the acute toxicity to aquatic species.

Asparagopsis armata Exudate Cocktail: The Quest for the Mechanisms of Toxic Action of an Invasive Seaweed on Marine Invertebrates

Carla O. Silva et al.

Summary: The red seaweed Asparagopsis armata exhibits strong invasive behavior and produces harmful compounds affecting marine organisms. This study focused on the biochemical responses of two invertebrates to sublethal concentrations of A. armata compounds, revealing different metabolic responses and neurotoxicity and oxidative stress as contributors to toxicity in one species. Changes in fatty acid profiles were species-specific, but both showed an increase in omega-3 PUFAs indicating a common regulation mechanism for inflammation and immunity responses.

In Vivo Effects of Neonicotinoid-Sulfoximine Insecticide Sulfoxaflor on Acetylcholinesterase Activity in the Tissues of Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Petek Piner Benli et al.

Summary: This study found that acute exposure to sulfoxaflor significantly increased AChE enzyme activity in the brain and muscle tissues of zebrafish, with induction percentages ranging from 10% to 83% and 19% to 79%, respectively.

Glutathione and its dependent enzymes' modulatory responses to neonicotinoid insecticide sulfoxaflor induced oxidative damage in zebrafish in vivo

Petek Piner Benli et al.

Summary: The study found that sulfoxaflor activated GSH-related antioxidants in the gill of zebrafish by increasing tGSH levels, GPx, and GR enzyme activities, while decreasing GST enzyme activity. Additionally, sulfoxaflor caused oxidative damage in the gill of zebrafish by increasing lipid peroxidation.
