Role of cerium as a promoter and process optimization studies for dehydration of glycerol to acetol over copper chromite catalyst

S. Basu et al.

Summary: A cerium-promoted silica supported copper chromite catalyst was synthesized using the sol-gel method, and characterized through various methods. The results showed that the optimal catalyst, SiCuCr40-Ce5, exhibited excellent acetol selectivity and cerium addition could lower the reaction temperature while increasing glycerol conversion. However, impurities like iron in laboratory reagent grade glycerol were found to affect the catalytic performance.

Summary: Copper aluminates catalysts synthesized via one-step flame-spray pyrolysis showed excellent catalytic performance in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol. The structure and particle size of the formed nanoparticles depend on the mole ratio of Cu to Al.

Summary: Mesoporous alumina was prepared by varying crystallization time and acid concentration, and evaluated in glycerol dehydration. The specific surface area, crystallinity, and acidic properties of the samples were dependent on both the crystallization time and acid concentration. The catalytic properties were related to the specific surface area and acidic characteristics, with conversions of glycerol above 92% obtained for all samples.

Comparison of fermentative hydrogen production from glycerol using immobilized and suspended mixed cultures

Summary: This study demonstrated that using immobilized microorganisms for hydrogen production from glycerol can enhance both cumulative hydrogen production and hydrogen yield, with improved tolerance to high substrate concentration and higher capability in glycerol utilization. The enhanced hydrogen production may be attributed to the favorable micro-environment created for different microorganisms in immobilized beads.

Summary: Several copper supported catalysts were prepared and tested in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol, with Cu/Dol catalyst displaying superior performance due to the mutual interaction between copper and dolomite species. The presence of copper species enriched on dolomite grain surfaces, enhanced redox and acidic properties, and small catalyst size contributed to high glycerol conversion and 1,2-PDO selectivity.
