Preoperative left atrial strain abnormalities are associated with the development of postoperative atrial fibrillation following isolated coronary artery bypass surgery

Olga N. Kislitsina et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether preoperative left atrial strain analysis could predict postoperative atrial fibrillation after CABG. Retrospective analysis of preoperative echocardiograms revealed that preoperative left ventricular strain and left atrial compliance and contraction strains were associated with the occurrence of postoperative atrial fibrillation. Preoperative LA strain measurements could more accurately identify patients with postoperative atrial fibrillation after CABG.

The role of dexmedetomidine in neurosurgery

S. R. Tasbihgou et al.

Summary: Dexmedetomidine is approved for sedation and analgesia in neurosurgical procedures, providing an arousable state of sedation that benefits patient cooperation with neurological tests. It can also reduce the dose of other drugs used for general anesthesia and has potential neuroprotective effects and decreased incidence of delirium, although further research is needed.

Critical Review and Meta-Analysis of Postoperative Sedation after Adult Cardiac Surgery: Dexmedetomidine Versus Propofol

Hesham A. Abowali et al.

Summary: In comparing postoperative sedation with dexmedetomidine versus propofol, dexmedetomidine showed advantages in reducing extubation time and ICU length of stay, but did not lead to a decrease in hospital length of stay. However, propofol was associated with higher rates of bradycardia and hypotension.

Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation After Cardiac Surgery: A Meta-Analysis

Kei Woldendorp et al.

Summary: Postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is common after cardiac surgery and is associated with significantly higher rates of both short-term and long-term stroke and mortality, as well as increased hospital stay. Differences in long-term survival hazard may be due to the underlying pathophysiological risk factors for POAF, which differ by surgical procedure.
