Sleep Apnea-Specific Hypoxic Burden, Symptom Subtypes, and Risk of Cardiovascular Events and All-Cause Mortality

Wojciech Trzepizur et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate whether symptom subtypes and OSA-specific hypoxic burden are associated with the risk of major adverse CV events in a clinical setting. The results showed that HB and overall nocturnal hypoxemia were the only predictors of MACE, with a stronger association seen in younger patients and women.

Impact of obstructive sleep apnea on cardiometabolic health in a random sample of older adults in rural South Africa: building the case for the treatment of sleep disorders in underresourced settings

Johanna Roche et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and cardiometabolic risk (CMR) in a rural, low-income, older adult African-ancestry sample in South Africa. The results showed a high prevalence of OSA in this population and its association with CMR, highlighting the need for health education and screening for OSA to prevent cardiovascular morbidity, particularly among women.

Women with OSA have higher chances of having metabolic syndrome than men: effect of gender on syndrome Z in cross sectional study

Poonam Chaudhary et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Metabolic syndrome (MS) in patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and found that MS was highly prevalent in the OSA population at 72.7%, with a higher prevalence of MS in female OSA patients (88%) compared to males (68%). Screening for MS in all OSA patients is recommended for early intervention to prevent cardiovascular complications.

Impact of obstructive sleep apnea complicated with type 2 diabetes on long-term cardiovascular risks and all-cause mortality in elderly patients

Xiaofeng Su et al.

Summary: The presence of type 2 diabetes in elderly patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) increases the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), hospitalization for unstable angina, and a composite of all events. Specific populations such as overweight or obese individuals, females, those aged 70 or older, and those with mild OSA are at a higher risk for MACE when combined with type 2 diabetes.

Prevalence and Impact of Metabolic Syndrome on Short-Term Prognosis in Patients with Acute Coronary Syndrome: Prospective Cohort Study

Korinan Fanta et al.

Summary: This study conducted in two tertiary hospitals in Ethiopia evaluated 176 patients with acute coronary syndrome and found a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) among them. The presence of MS was significantly associated with in-hospital major adverse cardiovascular events and was an independent predictor of 30-day mortality. Initiating appropriate strategies for MS prevention and timely diagnosis could improve patient outcomes.

Summary: The study found that snoring sound characteristics are associated with carotid artery profiles among early OSA patients, which cannot be detected by ultrasound as organic changes in the carotid artery have not yet begun.
