Synergies and tradeoffs among Sustainable Development Goals across boundaries in a metacoupled world

Zhiqiang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new theoretical framework and general procedure to evaluate SDG synergies and tradeoffs within and across boundaries, based on the concept of metacoupling. Using the examples of tourism and panda loans, the study evaluates the effects on six SDGs in the Wolong Nature Reserve and other panda reserves. The research reveals a total of 17 synergies and two tradeoffs, with internal synergies and tradeoffs mostly occurring within Wolong, while cross-reserve synergies and tradeoffs take place across boundaries.
