Preparation and molecular simulation of grafted polybenzimidazoles containing benzimidazole type side pendant as high-temperature proton exchange membranes

Yiming Xiao et al.

Summary: Phosphoric acid-doped polybenzimidazole membranes with side chains of benzimidazole group exhibit excellent properties in terms of doping level of phosphoric acid, retention stability of phosphoric acid, and proton conductivity under certain mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, and thermal stability. The performance of the grafted membrane is mainly improved by increasing the free volume of the polymer membrane, enhancing the binding energy, and densifying the hydrogen bond network structure between the polymer membrane and phosphoric acid. Adjusting the length of the side chain and the number of benzimidazole groups allows for precise control of phosphoric acid retention stability and proton conductivity.

High-performance composite membrane based on synergistic main-chain/side-chain proton conduction channels for the vanadium redox flow battery

Penghua Qian et al.

Summary: A series of composite proton-exchange membranes composed of SPEEK and SPPTA were prepared through a solution-blending technique. The membranes showed a trade-off balance between proton conductivity and vanadium ion permeability, exhibiting high ion selectivity and excellent performance in vanadium redox flow battery applications. The SPEEK/SPPTA composite membranes demonstrated structural stability and long-term durability, with high voltage efficiency and energy efficiency, making them a promising candidate for use in vanadium redox flow batteries.
