Origin of translational control by eIF2α phosphorylation: insights from genome-wide translational profiling studies in fission yeast

Katsura Asano

Summary: The translational control system involving eIF2 alpha phosphorylation has been found to regulate transcription factors translation to activate transcription in yeast and mammals, though mammals have additional eIF2 alpha kinases activated by distinct stimuli. Studies in fission yeast provide unexpected insights into the evolution of this system from simple to complex.

Sequestration of the PKC ortholog Pck2 in stress granules as a feedback mechanism of MAPK signaling in fission yeast

Yuki Kanda et al.

Summary: The study unveils the crucial role of stress granules in PKC/MAPK signaling activation in fission yeast, showing that high-heat stress induces the translocation of Pck2 from cell tips into stress granules and MAPK activation stimulates Pck2 recruitment to stress granules.

Detection of surface forces by the cell-wall mechanosensor Wsc1 in yeast

Ramakanth Neeli-Venkata et al.

Summary: The study on the conserved CW sensor Wsc1 in fission yeast revealed the formation of micrometer-sized clusters at sites of force application onto the CW, which assembled within minutes of CW compression and disassembled upon relaxation. Wsc1 accumulates to sites of enhanced mechanical stress through reduced lateral diffusivity, mediated by the binding of its extracellular WSC domain to CW polysaccharides, independently of canonical polarity, trafficking, and downstream CW regulatory pathways. Wsc1 may represent an autonomous module to detect and transduce local surface forces onto the CW.

Specific Functional Features of the Cell Integrity MAP Kinase Pathway in the Dimorphic Fission Yeast Schizosaccharomyces japonicus

Elisa Gomez-Gil et al.

Summary: MAPK signaling pathways play essential roles in eukaryotic organisms by transducing extracellular stimuli into cellular responses. Differences in CIP-related functions and regulation were observed between two fission yeast species, with Pck1 and Pck2 antagonistically regulating hyphal differentiation in S. japonicus. Chimeric MAPK-swapping experiments revealed the influence of a modified N-lobe domain secondary structure in Pmk1 on the CIP signaling features of S. japonicus.
