Mucormycosis in COVID-19: A systematic review of cases reported worldwide and in India

Awadhesh Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: This systematic review analyzed the characteristics of patients with both COVID-19 and mucormycosis, finding a high proportion of cases in males, 80% with pre-existing diabetes, and a significant use of corticosteroids in treating COVID-19, contributing to mortality in some cases.

Is Gut Microbiota Dysbiosis a Predictor of Increased Susceptibility to Poor Outcome of COVID-19 Patients? An Update

Carolina Ferreira et al.

Summary: The composition of gut microbiota may play a role in the severity of COVID-19 infection, as it is related to immune system response, gastrointestinal symptoms, and the virus receptor ACE2. Patients with pre-existing chronic diseases are more likely to have dysbiosis in gut microbiota, and those with severe outcomes often exhibit hyperresponsiveness of the immune system and a cytokine storm, which may be associated with impaired microbiota phenotype.

COVID-19 Impairs Immune Response to Candida albicans

Dominique Moser et al.

Summary: COVID-19 patients with ARDS show abnormal immune phenotypes and cytokine levels, indicating a potential risk for secondary infections. They demonstrate an increased susceptibility to Aspergillus infection and exhibit aberrant immune response towards Candida albicans.

Environmental Candida auris and the Global Warming Emergence Hypothesis

Arturo Casadevall et al.

Summary: Global warming has been suggested as a contributing factor to the simultaneous emergence of Candida auris as a nosocomial pathogen on different continents. Isolating C. auris from the remote Andaman Islands supports the hypothesis that it is an environmental organism. The slower growth of one environmental isolate at mammalian temperatures suggests recent thermal adaptation, potentially due to climate change.

Emergence of Candida auris in Brazil in a COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit

Joao N. de Almeida et al.

Summary: In December 2020, Candida auris emerged in Brazil, with the first two patients colonized in the same COVID-19 intensive care unit. Antifungal susceptibility testing showed low minimal inhibitory concentrations for various drugs. Microsatellite typing revealed clonal strains belonging to the South Asian clade of C. auris. The hypothesis is that the species was introduced several months before the first recognized case and/or emerged locally in the coastline Salvador area during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Trichosporon asahii superinfections in critically ill COVID-19 patients overexposed to antimicrobials and corticosteroids

Joao Nobrega de Almeida Jr et al.

Summary: This study investigated Trichosporon asahii fungemia among critically ill COVID-19 patients in a Brazilian referral centre from July to September 2020. Five patients developed TAF, with common risk conditions. The use of voriconazole therapy was common, with a high 30-day mortality rate. The T asahii strains had low minimal inhibitory concentrations for azole derivatives. Judicious prescription of antibiotics, corticosteroids, and antifungals is important in preventing infections by hard-to-treat fungi like T asahii in critically ill COVID-19 patients.

COVID-19 Associated Mucormycosis: A Systematic Review from Diagnostic Challenges to Management

Farah Yasmin et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in cases of mucormycosis in patients, causing worse prognosis and challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Limited guidelines for screening and management have raised concerns among healthcare professionals about the potential threat of an epidemic alongside the pandemic.

A Report of Candida blankii Fungemia and Possible Endocarditis in an Immunocompetent Individual and the Review of Literature

Vidya S. Kollu et al.

Summary: Candida blankii, an emerging pathogenic fungus, has been identified in immunocompromised patients causing fungemia. This study reports a case of C. blankii fungemia in an immunocompetent individual, successfully treated with a combination of antifungal agents. Further research is needed due to the variable susceptibility pattern and lack of treatment guidelines for this organism.

COVID-19-Associated Pulmonary Aspergillosis, March-August 2020

Jon Salmanton-Garcia et al.

Summary: This study found that most patients with coronavirus disease-associated pulmonary aspergillosis (CAPA) are diagnosed shortly after admission, with the majority being treated in the ICU. Azole-resistant strains of Aspergillus fumigatus were common in patients, and voriconazole was the main treatment choice. The overall mortality rate was approximately 52.2%, with about one third of deaths attributed to CAPA.
