Farm scale as a driver of agricultural development in the Kenyan Rift Valley

Niels Debonne et al.

Summary: The study found that medium-scale farms in the Kenyan Rift Valley are not a new phenomenon, and most of them have gradually increased in size by buying or renting additional land. There is no difference in crop yields between medium-scale farms and small-scale farms, but medium-scale farms tend to grow cash crops and serve non-local markets, while employing fewer people.

The socioeconomic and environmental drivers of the COVID-19 pandemic: A review

Tong Wu

Summary: In recent decades, intensification of the socioeconomic and environmental drivers has contributed to the risk of pandemics such as COVID-19, including ecosystem conversion, meat consumption, urbanization, and connectivity among cities and countries. To mitigate these risks, policy measures such as habitat protection and restrictions on the wildlife trade are necessary.

Socializing One Health: an innovative strategy to investigate social and behavioral risks of emerging viral threats

Karen Saylors et al.

Summary: The USAID's Emerging Pandemic Threats (EPT) PREDICT project funded the development of regional, national, and local One Health capacities to strengthen global capacity in preventing, detecting, and controlling infectious diseases in animals and people. The project adopted a wide range of social science research methods to identify and assess socio-cultural behaviors influencing zoonotic disease emergence. Integrating social sciences allowed for a better understanding of the relationship between human activities and disease transmission dynamics.
