Effects of Different Short-Term UV-B Radiation Intensities on Metabolic Characteristics of Porphyra haitanensis

Shimei Fu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different short-term UV-B radiation on the growth, physiology, and metabolism of Porphyra haitanensis. It was found that UV-B radiation can lead to bleaching in the algae, while also increasing the contents of amino acids, sugars, proteins, and mycosporine-like amino acids. The metabolic profiles of P. haitanensis differed between control and UV-B-treated groups, with significant upregulation of various metabolites under UV-B exposure, suggesting an adaptive response mechanism to UV-B radiation.

Evolutionary Origins of DNA Repair Pathways: Role of Oxygen Catastrophe in the Emergence of DNA Glycosylases

Paulina Prorok et al.

Summary: LUCA is believed to have evolved in high-temperature, oxygen-free conditions, facing threats such as DNA decay, cosmic radiation, and metabolic radicals. Ancient forms of life had only two repair mechanisms, which may have evolved early on to counteract DNA damage in response to increased oxygen levels.

Tetrahydrobiopterin Photooxidation: a Key Process in Vitiligo Phototherapy

T. A. Telegina et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the excess oxidation of H(4)Bip in melanocytes triggers an autocatalytic cycle of hydrogen peroxide synthesis, leading to activation of the immune system in vitiligo. UV photooxidation can disrupt this cycle, making the range of 300-325 nm efficient for vitiligo phototherapy.

DNA damage repair: historical perspectives, mechanistic pathways and clinical translation for targeted cancer therapy

Ruixue Huang et al.

Summary: Genomic instability is a characteristic of various cancers, with radiotherapy and chemotherapy in cancer treatment based on this property but also accompanied by adverse effects. Targeted cancer therapy has the potential to suppress cancer cells' DNA damage response by tailoring therapy to individual patients lacking specific DNA damage response functions, which is crucial for the emergence of promising druggable targets in the future.
