Inspired by silk, double core-sheath bi-phasic fibers were fabricated in this study, showing improved strength, maintained hydrophobicity, and cytocompatibility. This strategy holds great potential for applications such as material carriers and tissue engineering scaffolds.
Endowing electrospun fiber with excellent mechanical properties is of great importance but still has difficulties, especially without sacrificing other performances. Herein, bio-inspired by the silk, we fabricated double core sheath bi-phasic fibers, investigated the mechanical properties, surface wettability and cytocompatibility. The results show that the as-prepared double core-sheath bi-phasic fibers gain improved strength attributed to a unique sandwich-type structure while keeping hydrophobicity and cytocompatibility almost unchanged. This strategy holds enormous potential for a variety of applications, such as host-guest material carrier and scaffold for tissue engineering.
