The Lung Microbiome and Pneumonia

Melinda M. Pettigrew et al.

Summary: Pneumonia is a heterogeneous and complex disease that remains a leading source of disease and death globally, despite advancements in diagnostics, treatment, and prevention. Current methods for prevention include vaccines and antibiotic treatment, but the threat of antimicrobial resistance poses challenges to these treatments. Additionally, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 has significantly shifted the epidemiology of pneumonia since December 2019, highlighting the need for a broader conceptual framework to address the pathogenesis of pneumonia.

Metataxonomic investigation of the microbial community in the trachea and oropharynx of healthy controls and diabetic patients using endotracheal tubes

Sun Young Cho et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of endotracheal tube washing fluid as a viable control for upper respiratory investigations. Results showed similar microbiota composition between endotracheal tube washings and oral gargles in healthy controls, with differences in relative abundance of certain taxonomic units. Diabetic subjects exhibited lower diversity compared to non-diabetic subjects.

Dynamics of the Upper Respiratory Tract Microbiota and Its Association with Mortality in COVID-19

Lili Ren et al.

Summary: The study found differences in the upper respiratory tract microbiota of COVID-19 patients compared to healthy controls, with deceased patients showing a more distinct microbiota profile. The alterations in microbiota were correlated with inflammatory cytokine levels and mortality. Certain microbiota profiles may be associated with the prognosis of non-severe patients.

Amino acid metabolism and signalling pathways: potential targets in the control of infection and immunity

Daniel Tome

Summary: The defense against pathogens in mammals involves interactions between immune functions and metabolic pathways to eradicate infection while preventing hyperinflammation. Amino acid metabolic pathways and related antimicrobial agents may represent potential targets for therapeutic strategies. The activity of arginine-catabolizing enzymes can reduce hyperinflammation, while sensors of amino acid starvation can restrict inflammation and viral replication.

Respiratory Microbiota Profiles Associated With the Progression From Airway Inflammation to Remodeling in Mice With OVA-Induced Asthma

Jun Zheng et al.

Summary: This study established a chronic asthma mouse model induced by ovalbumin (OVA) to explore the dynamic changes in the respiratory microbiota during different stages of asthma and their association with chronic asthma progression. Metagenomic functional prediction indicated distinct changes associated with acute allergic inflammation and airway remodeling.
