Grassland Mowing Detection Using Sentinel-1 Time Series: Potential and Limitations

Mathilde De Vroey et al.

Summary: Grasslands are diverse ecosystems providing food, wildlife habitat, and carbon storage. Land use intensity, particularly mowing dates and frequencies, affects their ecological value. This study demonstrates the potential of using Sentinel-1 C-band SAR to detect mowing events in agricultural grasslands, with 54% accuracy in detecting hay meadows.
