Effects of Compliance With the Early Management Bundle (SEP-1) on Mortality Changes Among Medicare Beneficiaries With Sepsis A Propensity Score Matched Cohort Study

Sean R. Townsend et al.

Summary: This study examined the association between compliance with the SEP-1 quality measure and 30-day mortality among Medicare beneficiaries. The results showed that compliance with SEP-1 was associated with lower 30-day mortality.

Infectious Diseases Society of America Position Paper: Recommended Revisions to the National Severe Sepsis and Septic Shock Early Management Bundle (SEP-1) Sepsis Quality Measure

Chanu Rhee et al.

Summary: The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) is concerned about the potential for antibiotic overuse due to the SEP-1 measure and has outlined recommendations to limit its application to patients with septic shock. The IDSA believes that managing possible sepsis without shock should be guided by more appropriate guidelines that allow for individualized patient care.

Impact of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Sepsis Core Measure on Antibiotic Use

Amy L. Pakyz et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of the implementation of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) core measure sepsis (SEP-1) bundle in 2015 on broad-spectrum antibiotic use and Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) occurrence rates. The results showed an increase in broad-spectrum antibiotic use and a decrease in CDI rates post-SEP-1 implementation.

Treatment Patterns and Clinical Outcomes After the Introduction of the Medicare Sepsis Performance Measure (SEP-1)

Ian J. Barbash et al.

Summary: An evaluation of the impact of the SEP-1 mandatory reporting program on treatment patterns and patient outcomes in 11 hospitals within an integrated health system found variable changes in process measures, with the greatest effect seen in an increase in lactate measurement. However, there were no significant improvements in clinical outcomes, indicating a need for revision to optimize future effectiveness.

Likelihood of Bacterial Infection in Patients Treated With Broad-Spectrum IV Antibiotics in the Emergency Department*

Claire N. Shappell et al.

Summary: One third of patients empirically treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics in the emergency department are ultimately diagnosed with noninfectious or viral conditions. These findings underscore the difficulty diagnosing serious infections in the emergency department and have important implications for guidelines and quality measures that compel immediate empiric antibiotics for all patients with possible sepsis.
