Electrochemical oxidation of PFOA and PFOS in landfill leachates at low and highly boron-doped diamond electrodes

Mattia Pierpaoli et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that electrolysis on boron-doped diamond electrodes is effective in removing PFASs, specifically perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS), from landfill leachates. The presence of long-chain intermediates during electrolysis differed significantly between high and low boron doping concentrations, indicating greater sensitivity of low-doped BDD to the long-chain intermediates of PFOA. This suggests potential for using BDD-electrolysis for PFAS removal despite the presence of competing components in landfill leachates.

A combined current density technique for the electrochemical oxidation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) with boron-doped diamond

Mary Ensch et al.

Summary: The study utilized a boron-doped diamond electrode stack and a combined current density technique to reduce energy consumption for treating PFOA; previous methods developed were only applicable to non-fluorinated compounds, while this study specifically targeted PFAS; promising results were also observed in the treatment of an ion-exchange regeneration solution.

Electrochemical technologies combined with membrane filtration

Ane Urtiaga

Summary: This article reviews the recent progress in the coupling of membrane separation and electrochemical technologies for water treatment. Process integration strategies are classified into three groups, including electrocoagulation and electrooxidation as pretreatment for reducing membrane fouling, and electrooxidation as remediation treatment for concentrate of priority pollutants. The article evaluates the optimal integration of technologies using process systems engineering tools for producing purified water with minimized energy consumption and total costs. Overall, it concludes that preconcentration strategy enhances electrooxidation performance to degrade persistent pollutants.

Improved electrical driving current of electrochemical treatment of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in water using Boron-Doped Diamond anode

Suratsawadee Sukeesan et al.

Summary: The study developed an efficient electrochemical oxidation (EO) system to remove PFAS from water by reducing the physical resistance of the titanium connector using Boron-Doped Diamond (BDD) and titanium electrodes. The system showed higher removal efficiency for PFOS, PFHxS, and PFOA with low energy consumption due to the reduced resistance. The conductivity with low resistance increased approximately 1.3 times compared to higher resistance levels.

Degradation of perfluorooctane sulfonate via in situ electro-generated ferrate and permanganate oxidants in NOM-rich source waters

Sean T. McBeath et al.

Summary: A novel process involving the in situ electrochemical generation of ferrate and permanganate oxidants, in circumneutral conditions, from low concentration aqueous iron (Fe2+) and manganese (Mn2+), is investigated for the treatment of the ubiquitous and highly recalcitrant micro-pollutant, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). The study showed that while permanganate had little effect on PFOS removal, coupling EO with ferrate generation and oxidation significantly increased degradation, surpassing the effectiveness of solely EO.PFOS degradation rates increased with increasing current density and initial Fe2+ concentration.
