Cefiderocol versus high-dose, extended-infusion meropenem for the treatment of Gram-negative nosocomial pneumonia (APEKS-NP): a randomised, double-blind, phase 3, non-inferiority trial

Richard G. Wunderink et al.

Summary: Cefiderocol was found to be non-inferior to high-dose, extended-infusion meropenem in terms of all-cause mortality on day 14 in patients with Gram-negative nosocomial pneumonia, with similar tolerability. This suggests that cefiderocol is a potential option for the treatment of patients with nosocomial pneumonia, including those caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

Floating treatment wetlands integrated with microbial fuel cell for the treatment of urban wastewaters and bioenergy generation

Gustavo Stolzenberg Colares et al.

Summary: The study found that the combined system utilizing FTW and MFC effectively degraded pollutants in wastewater and generated a certain amount of bioelectricity in the short term. However, the system showed low efficiency in treating total nitrogen and total phosphorus, suggesting further improvement is needed.

Microbial community dynamic shifts associated with sulfamethoxazole degradation in microbial fuel cells

Binghan Xie et al.

Summary: This study investigated the degradation of SMX and the response of microbial communities to different initial concentrations of SMX in MFCs. It was found that the highest SMX removal efficiency was achieved at 5 mg/L, while high concentration of SMX inhibited electron transfer. The 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing revealed significant shifts in anode biofilm communities with different initial SMX concentrations in MFCs.

Effects of continuous sulfamonomethoxine shock on the power generation performance and microbial community structure of MFCs under seasonal temperature variation

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: The addition of SMM has a negative impact on the power generation performance and microbial community structure of microbial fuel cells (MFCs), but power generation gradually increases with extended operation. Furthermore, degradation of SMM in the MFCs can alleviate the inhibitory effect on bacteria.

Tetracycline inhibition and transformation in microbial fuel cell systems: Performance, transformation intermediates, and microbial community structure

Sha Long et al.

Summary: The transformation of tetracycline in microbial fuel cells was mainly due to adsorption, with implications for the inhibition of biofilm activity and changes in microbial populations. The MFC-Fenton cathode proved to be an efficient and energy-saving process for tetracycline removal compared to anodic bio-oxidation.

Insight into the evolution of microbial community and antibiotic resistance genes in anammox process induced by copper after recovery from oxytetracycline stress

Qian-Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: The experimental results show that the stress on Anammox performance caused by Cu2+ is reversible, and the inhibition can be slowed down by the combination of OTM and Cu2+. The positive relation between dominant bacteria and abundance of functional genes implies that the recovery of performance is due to the gradual domestication of latent resistant species.

Diffusion and filamentous bacteria jointly govern the spatiotemporal process of sulfide removal in sediment microbial fuel cells

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal removal processes of AVS in SMFCs with different external resistances. The results showed that REAVS decreased with increased external resistance and distance from the anode. Mathematical prediction suggested diffusion-governed REAVS within the first 15 days, but the accuracy decreased with time and distance. Microbial community analysis revealed that filamentous keystone bacteria controlled the AVS removal in SMFCs.

Removal of sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline in constructed wetlands integrated with microbial fuel cells influenced by influent and operational conditions

Huiyang Wen et al.

Summary: This study found that glucose outperformed other carbon sources in MFC-CWs, with moderate concentration (200 mg L-1) resulting in the best removal of SMX and TC. The highest removal percentages of SMX and TC were obtained in MFC-CWs with an external resistance of 700 Omega. Aeration for 12 hours was shown to improve the removal efficiency of antibiotics in MFC-CWs.

Evaluation of a continuous flow microbial fuel cell for treating synthetic swine wastewater containing antibiotics

Dongle Cheng et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of a double-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) in treating synthetic swine wastewater containing sulfonamide antibiotics. Results showed that the MFC operated better under the sequential anode-cathode mode, with higher removal efficiency of pollutants, although the removal efficiency of antibiotics still needs improvement. Antbiotics exerted toxic effects on microorganisms in the MFC.

The fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) from livestock wastewater (dominated by quinolone antibiotics) treated by microbial fuel cell (MFC)

Jia Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that after MFC treatment, the number of antibiotic resistance genes and mobile genetic elements in livestock wastewater decreased. MFC showed good removal efficiency for antibiotics like tetracycline, but was less effective in removing vancomycin and beta-lactamase genes.

Impact factors of the accumulation, migration and spread of antibiotic resistance in the environment

Zibo Lin et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance poses significant risks to global public health and ecological environment. Horizontal gene transfer plays a crucial role in the spread of antibiotic resistance genes, and the presence of antibiotic-resistant genes and bacteria in the environment exacerbates the risk of antibiotic resistance transmission.

Effect of the tetracycline antibiotics on performance and microbial community of microbial fuel cell

Seyho Topcu et al.

Summary: The adverse effects of tetracycline antibiotics on microbial activity pose a serious risk to the biologic wastewater treatment process. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) offer a promising technology for wastewater treatment and renewable power generation, making it essential to investigate the inhibitory effects of tetracyclines on MFCs. The study found that increasing antibiotic concentrations significantly impacted MFC performance and microbial communities.
