Extrusion-based 3D printed biodegradable porous iron

Summary: This study extensively investigated the in vitro biodegradation behavior, electrochemical characteristics, time-dependent mechanical properties, and cytocompatibility of porous iron scaffolds fabricated using extrusion-based 3D printing. The results demonstrated that extrusion-based 3D printing can produce porous iron scaffolds with improved biodegradability and mechanical properties resembling bone for potential use as biodegradable bone substitutes.

Insight into physical interpretation of high frequency time constant in electrochemical impedance spectra of Mg

Summary: Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were used to study the surface evolution of magnesium in 0.05 M NaCl solution at three different pH levels. The thickness of the MgO film was calculated based on the assumption that the high frequency time constant originates from the surface film. Comparisons with actual surface conditions confirmed that the high frequency time constant is related to the barrier properties of the surface film.

Summary: The addition of 1% Ag enhances the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of Fe-35Mn, while maintaining acceptable biocompatibility in vivo. The uniform dispersion of silver particles contributes to slight improvements in compressive properties through increased density and reduced porosity volume.The alloy exhibits properties suitable for orthopedic applications, with an initial increase in nonadverse tissue inflammatory responses at 4 weeks post-implantation that subside by 12 weeks.
