Uncovering design principles for amorphous-like heat conduction using two-channel lattice dynamics

Riley Hanus et al.

Summary: This study explores the design principles of the diffuson channel in thermoelectric materials by investigating structurally-complex crystalline Yb-14 (Mn,Mg)Sb-11 experimentally and computationally. It demonstrates a method for rational design of amorphous-like heat conduction by modifying phonon modes through chemical means, showing an unexpected relationship between atomic mass and thermal conductivity. The research highlights the importance of two-channel lattice dynamics in predicting and designing materials with significant diffuson channel contributions.

Enhanced atomic ordering leads to high thermoelectric performance in AgSbTe2

Subhajit Roychowdhury et al.

Summary: By optimizing atomic disorder and cadmium doping in polycrystalline silver antimony telluride, high thermoelectric performance with near room-temperature figure of merit ZT of around 1.5 and maximum ZT of around 2.6 at 573 kelvin is achieved. This strategy of enhancing cationic ordering while reducing lattice thermal conductivity is applicable to most thermoelectric materials with inherent atomic disorder.

Nonperturbative phonon scatterings and the two-channel thermal transport in Tl3VSe4

Zezhu Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigates nonperturbative phonon scattering in strongly anharmonic materials, using Tl3VSe4 as an example. Comparisons between perturbation theory (PT) and molecular dynamics (MD) calculations show significant differences in phonon linewidths. Theoretical phonon linewidths underestimate scatterings, with a crucial coherence contribution to total thermal conductivity at high temperatures.

High carrier mobility and ultralow thermal conductivity in the synthetic layered superlattice Sn4Bi10Se19

Ruiming Lu et al.

Summary: By integrating structurally and chemically distinct building units within the same crystal lattice, complex materials with coexisting functionalities can be designed. The electronic and thermal transport properties of Sn4Bi10Se19 are strongly influenced by the degree of crystallinity and atomic ordering within the crystal lattice. Well-crystallized samples exhibit higher electrical conductivity and lower thermal conductivity compared to poorly crystallized samples.

A material catalogue with glass-like thermal conductivity mediated by crystallographic occupancy for thermoelectric application

Zihang Liu et al.

Summary: This study introduced a new crystallographic parameter for identifying materials with low lattice thermal conductivity, leading to the discovery and synthesis of two compounds with very low κ(lat). By exploring the relationship between crystallography and thermal properties in crystalline materials, the impact of partial occupancy on complex lattice dynamics was revealed, providing new avenues for discovering materials with low κ(lat).
