Modelling Short- and Long-Term Dependencies of Clustered High-Threshold Exceedances in Significant Wave Heights

Pushpa Dissanayake et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the application of the peaks-over-threshold (POT) method for extreme modeling in environmental variables, introducing explicit modeling methods for short- or long-range dynamics, and proposes a new two-step approach that considers both short- and long-range correlations. Empirical analysis shows that solely modeling short- or long-range dependencies does not satisfactorily explain extremal clustering, highlighting the importance of jointly incorporating short- and long-range dependence in extreme value modeling.
