Experimental study on failure mechanisms of sandwich panels with multi-layered aluminum foam/UHMWPE laminate core under combined blast and fragments loading

Sipei Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the failure mechanisms of sandwich panels with multilayered aluminum foam/UHMWPE laminate cores under combined blast and fragments loading. The results showed that introducing UHMWPE laminate alleviated back face damage, while the density gradation of foam layers and incorporation of ceramic fiber felt had varying effects on back face damage. The sandwich panels suffered more destructive damage under combined loading compared to bare blast loading, with the configuration of UHMWPE laminate located at the bottom layer favored for comprehensive protection.

Free volume based nonlinear viscoelastic model for polyurea over a wide range of strain rates and temperatures

Chencheng Gong et al.

Summary: This paper develops a nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model for polyurea, considering its complex nonlinear stress-strain response. The model takes into account nonlinear viscoelasticity, entropic and energetic elasticity, as well as the interaction of chain segments, stretch of molecular chains, and covalent bonds from the perspective of molecular structure.

Impact of polyurea-coated metallic targets: Computational framework

Theodosios Stergiou et al.

Summary: Polyurea elastomers are known for their advantageous impact-mitigation characteristics, improving dynamic performance of components and structures. Thicker polyurea layers on thin metallic plates can increase ballistic performance, with a reported improvement of 7.4 m/s per millimeter for thicknesses greater than 4 mm, while thinner coatings may result in decreased performance. The energy-absorbing capacity of thin plates is significantly altered by the introduction of polyurea, depending on impact velocity, polymer thickness, and interfacial interactions.
