An Entropic Approach to Estimating the Instability Criterion of People in Floodwaters

Zhongfan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study derives the hydrodynamic criterion of the instability of people in floodwaters using probability method based on Shannon entropy theory, focusing on incipient velocity and water depth. The proposed entropy-based model shows validity considering data scattering and could be a valuable addition to existing deterministic models for characterizing the instability criterion of people in an urban flooding event. The findings of this study could be useful for flood hazard mitigation and flood strategy management.

Marine artificial reefs, a meta-analysis of their design, objectives and effectiveness

Baptiste Vivier et al.

Summary: Artificial reefs (AR) exhibit a wide diversity in design, objectives, and monitoring strategies, with inert materials like concrete and biomimetic designs enhancing their benefits to the local environment. Fisheries projects show high efficiencies, but weaknesses in environmental assessments are highlighted. It is recommended to use a combination of structural and functional ecology approaches for monitoring to properly assess the impact of AR on the environment.

Assessing the Drivers behind the Structure and Diversity of Fish Assemblages Associated with Rocky Shores in the Galapagos Archipelago

Stijn Bruneel et al.

Summary: The study found that the structure of fish assemblages on the two studied islands in the Galapagos archipelago (Santa Cruz and Floreana) was mainly influenced by temperature and nutrient concentrations. In the more populated island of Santa Cruz, water conditions had a greater impact on fish assemblage structure, while physical habitats played a larger role in the more pristine area of Floreana. A wide variety of species from different geographical origins were distributed over the different islands, suggesting that most fish species are able to reach the islands of the archipelago.

MPM simulation of solitary wave run-up on permeable boundaries

Lucy Harris et al.

Summary: The research aims to investigate the effect of modifying the mean grain size of a permeable barrier on wave run-up response to a solitary wave. By using the Material Point Method (MPM), situations where the fluid moves through the solid skeleton, such as wave run-up on porous structures, can be accurately modeled. The study shows that with an increase in the mean grain size and permeability, the overall wave run-up height can be significantly reduced.

Effects of Artificial Reefs on Phytoplankton Community Structure in Baiyangdian Lake, China

Hao Zhu et al.

Summary: Research shows that designing and using small artificial reefs in freshwater lakes can improve the diversity and density of phytoplankton in surrounding waters, promoting the growth of diatoms while inhibiting the growth of cyanobacteria. Artificial fish reefs affect the phytoplankton community structure of surrounding water bodies mainly through the absorption of phosphorus nutrients.

Numerical Analysis of the Flow Effect of the Menger-Type Artificial Reefs with Different Void Space Complexity Indices

Xinxin Wang et al.

Summary: Utilizing fractal theory to construct symmetric artificial reef models at different levels, this study examines the spatial effectiveness of artificial reefs by using fractal dimension concept and void space complexity index. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) flow simulation is employed to investigate the impact of void space complexity on flow field performance of symmetric artificial reef models, revealing that higher spatial complexity index leads to better flow field performances in upwelling and wake regions. The efficiency indices of upwelling and wake regions are significantly higher for the fractal triangle artificial reef model compared to the fractal cube model at level 3.
