Performance and Regeneration of Methane Oxidation Catalyst for LNG Ships

Kati Lehtoranta et al.

Summary: The study shows that using methane oxidation catalyst (MOC) can effectively reduce methane slip emissions in LNG ships. The use of a special sulfur trap can protect MOC against sulfur poisoning to some extent, and regeneration done once a day can recover the efficiency of MOC.

Experimental Study on the Shear Band of Methane Hydrate-Bearing Sediment

Xiaobing Lu et al.

Summary: The study indicates that the presence of methane hydrates changes the mechanical properties of hydrate-bearing sediments from plastic failure to brittle failure when the hydrate saturation exceeds 13%; the shear bands can appear as either single oblique lines or inter-crossing lines, with most surfaces of shear bands being non-straight and the widths of the bands being unevenly distributed.

The Variation of Microbial (Methanotroph) Communities in Marine Sediments Due to Aerobic Oxidation of Hydrocarbons

Li Jing et al.

Summary: This study reveals the behavior of methanotrophic bacteria in the presence of pure methane and mixed hydrocarbons in marine sediments, showing changes in microbial community structures and dominance of methanotrophs after incubations. Different species of methanotrophs were observed under different treatment conditions, suggesting that some methanotrophs may also utilize ethane and propane in addition to methane. Such findings contribute to a better understanding of the effects and contributions of microbial activities in marine hydrocarbon seep ecosystems.

Laboratory Experimental Study on the Formation of Authigenic Carbonates Induced by Microbes in Marine Sediments

Zilin Wei et al.

Summary: Research in a bioreactor established a pore water environment in marine sediments, revealing that the formation mechanism of authigenic carbonates undergoes three stages: alkalinity rise, preferential formation of carbonate minerals, and formation of carbonate isomorphous series.

Iron-Coupled Anaerobic Oxidation of Methane in Marine Sediments: A Review

Hailin Yang et al.

Summary: Iron-coupled anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) may be the dominant non-sulfate-dependent process for methane consumption in marine ecosystems. Studies summarize the conditions for iron-coupled AOM, and discuss the forms of iron oxides as electron acceptors and the microbial mechanisms involved.

Hydrogen and carbon isotope fractionation factors of aerobic methane oxidation in deep-sea water

Shinsuke Kawagucci et al.

Summary: The study investigated hydrogen and carbon isotope ratios of methane as well as the associated fractionation factors in hydrothermal plumes in the Okinawa Trough, shedding light on the dynamics of methane cycling in the marine realm. Methanotrophs were found to be abundant in plumes above the Hatoma Knoll vent site, providing important insights into microbial communities in this region.
