Development of Depth-Limited Wave Boundary Layers over a Smooth Bottom

Hitoshi Tanaka et al.

Summary: A theoretical and numerical study was conducted to investigate the transformation of the wave boundary layer over a smooth bottom, and four criteria were theoretically obtained to recognize the inception of the depth-limited condition under waves. The validity of the theoretical criteria was confirmed through numerical simulation using a turbulence model and laboratory experiment data, as well as discussions on typical field situations induced by tidal motion and tsunami.

Numerical Simulation of the Boundary Layer Flow Generated in Monterey Bay, California, by the 2010 Chilean Tsunami: Case Study

Athanasios Makris et al.

Summary: This work presents a case study on the numerical simulation of the unsteady boundary layer generated by the 2010 Chilean tsunami in Monterey Bay, California, USA. The study utilizes a one-dimensional vertical boundary layer model, solving Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and two-equation k-omega turbulence closure. It demonstrates that the tsunami-induced boundary layer only spans a fraction of the local water depth, and highlights the likely significance of local converging-diverging effects and interaction with short wind waves on the generated boundary layer.

Numerical implementation of wave friction factor into the 1D tsunami shallow water equation model

Nguyen Xuan Tinh et al.

Summary: The study aims to develop a numerical method for tsunami simulation by introducing a wave friction factor into the conventional 1D shallow water equation in order to better describe the tsunami-induced bottom shear stress. The new method provides similar results to the original Manning method regarding water level and tsunami-induced velocity, but estimates higher bottom shear stress. The transition from the wave friction zone to the steady friction zone is found at a water depth of around 5 meters under the present computational conditions.
