Maaike le Feber et al.

Summary: While sensor-based exposure assessment has potential benefits in workplace settings, there are also ethical and privacy concerns that need to be addressed. Stakeholders currently see benefits in using sensors for targeted studies, but continuous monitoring of workers may still be seen as a step too far.

Peak Inhalation Exposure Metrics Used in Occupational Epidemiologic and Exposure Studies

Summary: Peak exposures can overwhelm normal defense mechanisms and induce adverse health effects. The definition and use of peak metrics in epidemiologic and exposure studies lack consensus. Characteristics of peak exposure depend on exposure patterns, biokinetics, and disease mechanisms.

Seven Pillars of Small Airways Disease in Asthma and COPD Supporting Opportunities for Novel Therapies

Omar S. Usmani et al.

Summary: Identification of pathologic changes in early and mild obstructive lung disease has highlighted the importance of small airways in contributing to symptoms. However, current therapies target symptoms and physiological changes rather than underlying causes of airflow disruption. Newer functional and imaging techniques allow for better assessment of small airways dysfunction, but gaps in understanding remain regarding the role of small airways dysfunction in early disease.

Application of Machine Learning in Pulmonary Function Assessment Where Are We Now and Where Are We Going?

Paresh C. Giri et al.

Summary: Machine learning has the potential to greatly benefit the analysis of pulmonary function tests by improving interpretation accuracy, discovering novel physiological biomarkers, and enabling precision medicine by combining mobile spirometry results with clinical profiles. However, there are challenges in developing and commercializing ML-assisted PFT interpretation programs, including the need for high quality data, varying data formats, and the importance of collaboration among clinicians, biomedical engineers, and information technologists. Despite these hurdles, the future advancements in this field represent significant progress for PFT in clinical medicine.

Respiratory impedance measured using impulse oscillometry in a healthy urban population

Kenneth Berger et al.

Summary: This study derived normative prediction equations for respiratory impedance in a healthy urban population, using BMI to describe the effect of obesity. The data analyzed from 472 healthy asymptomatic subjects in lower Manhattan showed that models using BMI as an independent predictor of respiratory oscillometry variables fit better than models using weight. The study suggests that lung function modeling may be best performed using height and BMI as independent variables.
