Multispecies spawning of scleractinian corals in nonreefal coral communities of northern Taiwan in the northwestern Pacific Ocean

Chieh-Jhen Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the reproductive patterns of 54 coral species in northern Taiwan, with most corals spawning in August and some in July, September, and October. The spawning patterns varied significantly in species and colony number from 2014 to 2016, with most corals spawning between 20:00 and 22:00 hrs for 5-8 consecutive nights after the full moon in July and August. Through this research, a better understanding of the spatial and temporal patterns of coral sexual reproduction in nonreefal coral communities was gained, with potential broader biogeological implications for the northwestern Pacific Ocean region.

Quaternary corals (Scleractinia: Merulinidae) from the Egyptian and Saudi Arabian Red Sea Coast

Hamza M. Khalil et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive description of the coral species of the Merulinidae family in the Red Sea, including new records from the Farasan Islands and El Quseir-Marsa Alam area. Terminology, systematic classification, and identification criteria have been updated, with known ages and stratigraphic ranges of species illustrated and discussed. Most coral species are still living in the present Red Sea, with a few extending back to the Pleistocene, Pliocene, and Miocene.
