Cobordism conjecture, anomalies, and the String Lamppost Principle

Miguel Montero et al.

Summary: We explored triviality of cobordism classes and anomaly cancellation in supergravity theories in d > 6, leading to the existence of defects called I-folds. The compactification conditions to lower dimensions with these defects being anomaly-free impose restrictions on higher dimensional theories, particularly on the allowed rank of gauge groups. These restrictions explain observed limitations in string theory constructions, with the solutions in eight and nine dimensions matching string theory compactifications.Constraints on the global structure of the gauge group in eight and nine dimensions were also derived using these techniques.

De Sitter decay through goldstino evaporation

Fotis Farakos et al.

Summary: By evaporating the goldstino multiplet, supersymmetry can be restored in supergravity theories with non-linearly realized supersymmetry supported by four-form flux. The existence of a super-extremal 2-brane is required for this procedure, in accordance with the WGC, and implies an imminent decay in de Sitter supergravity, leading to relaxation in supersymmetric AdS after the transition. The same decay mechanism also suggests that the KKLT de Sitter vacua are short-lived, providing a realization of KPV-type decays within 4D supergravity.

Obstacles to constructing de Sitter space in string theory

Michael Dine et al.

Summary: While there have been some successes, constructing de Sitter space in string theory remains challenging due to the lack of necessary tools within controlled approximations and the limited understanding of big-bang and big-crunch singularities. The existence or non-existence of metastable de Sitter space in string theory is still a matter of conjecture.

Swampland Conjectures for strings and membranes

Stefano Lanza et al.

Summary: The study explores the application of Swampland criteria to low-codimension charged objects such as strings and membranes in the context of 4D effective field theories, revealing new connections among the Swampland Conjectures through the classical RG flow of these objects' couplings. By translating constraints on UV charges and tensions to constraints on axionic kinetic terms and scalar potential of the effective field theory, it uncovers relationships among the various Swampland Conjectures.

Symmetries in Quantum Field Theory and Quantum Gravity

Daniel Harlow et al.

Summary: This paper refines and establishes a set of old conjectures about symmetries in quantum gravity using the AdS/CFT correspondence. It shows the absence of bulk global symmetries in AdS/CFT and discusses how long-range bulk gauge symmetries lead to global boundary symmetries. The results are extended to higher-form symmetries and the weak gravity conjecture is applied to more general gauge groups.

Is asymptotically safe inflation eternal?

J. Chojnacki et al.

Summary: This article explores the relationship between eternal inflation and the asymptotic safety hypothesis in other approaches to quantum gravity. It reveals that there is no tension between eternal inflation and asymptotic safety in both the matter and gravitational sectors, contrary to string theory. Additionally, it suggests that eternal inflation is not possible within the range of applicability of effective field quantum gravity theory.

Oh, wait, O8 de Sitter may be unstable!

Iosif Bena et al.

Summary: In the analysis of stable four-dimensional de Sitter vacua constructed by compactifying massive Type IIA supergravity with two O8 sources, the first source is interpreted as an O8(-) plane in String Theory, while the second source could correspond to either an O8(+) plane or an O8(-) plane with 16 D8-branes. The latter solution exhibits a tachyonic instability, where the D8-branes move away from the O8(-) plane. Possible ways of distinguishing between these sources are discussed.

Constraints on discrete global symmetries in quantum gravity

Passant Ali et al.

Summary: The realization of global symmetries in quantum-gravity-matter-systems has significant phenomenological implications. Within an asymptotically safe context, it is suggested that discrete global symmetries of the form Z(n), n > 4, cannot be realized in a near-perturbative regime, while an effective-field-theory approach to quantum gravity may feature such symmetries and provide a mechanism for generating mass hierarchies in the infrared without additional fine-tuning.

Weak gravity versus de Sitter

N. Cribiori et al.

Summary: By utilizing the magnetic weak gravity conjecture, this study uncovers a Dine-Seiberg problem for de Sitter critical points in supergravity theories. Various N=2 gauged supergravity models incorporating vector multiplets are presented, and in all cases, the weak gravity conjecture poses a threat to de Sitter. A degenerate mass matrix for the gravitini is identified as a common feature in all examples, therefore deemed a swampland criterion for de Sitter critical points.

Quantum corrections in 4d N=1 infinite distance limits and the weak gravity conjecture

Daniel Klaewer et al.

Summary: The study investigates quantum corrections in N = 1 supersymmetric theories, confirming the validity of the Emergent String Conjecture and exploring the effect of Weak Gravity Conjecture quantum corrections beyond the strict weak coupling limit. The research demonstrates how gauge threshold corrections and mass renormalisation effects modify super-extremality bounds and predict the renormalisation of mass towers for the Weak Gravity Conjecture to hold quantum mechanically.

Winding uplifts and the challenges of weak and strong SUSY breaking in AdS

Summary: The paper discusses the problem of metastable SUSY breaking in the landscape and the challenge of SUSY breaking in the AdS context. It proposes breaking SUSY using multi-cosine-shaped axion potentials and considers the potential for violating the non-SUSY AdS conjecture in the KKLT context and the type-IIA setting of DGKT.

The gravitino and the swampland

Niccolo Cribiori et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new swampland conjecture suggesting that the limit of vanishing gravitino mass corresponds to the massless limit of an infinite tower of states, leading to the breakdown of effective field theory. This proposal is tested in models from string theory compactification to four dimensions, with a general relation identified between gravitino mass and abelian gauge coupling. The researchers discuss the phenomenological implications of their conjecture in (quasi-)de Sitter backgrounds and derive a lower bound for the gravitino mass based on the Hubble parameter.

Cosmological α′-corrections from the functional renormalization group

Ivano Basile et al.

Summary: In this study, the Functional Renormalization Group techniques were applied in string theory to derive an effective mini-superspace action for cosmological backgrounds in terms of the string scale alpha '. T-duality played a crucial role in classifying perturbative curvature corrections, leading to renormalization group equations with exact solutions in any spacetime dimension D. While an analytic solution with a non-Gaussian ultraviolet fixed point was found around D = 2, no analogous solution was found in D = 4 using polynomial truncations. The study also discussed potential cosmological implications of the findings.

Merging the weak gravity and distance conjectures using BPS extremal black holes

Naomi Gendler et al.

Summary: The text discusses the charge-to-mass structure of BPS states in N = 2 compactifications of Type IIB string theory on Calabi-Yau three-folds and its implications for the Swampland Conjectures in the presence of multiple gauge and scalar fields. It shows that in infinite distance limits, the BPS bound coincides with the black hole extremality bound and the charge-to-mass vectors of the BPS states lie on degenerate ellipsoids with only two non-degenerate directions. It provides general bounds on the mass decay rate of the tower of states in terms of the black hole extremality bound, implying lambda >= 1/6.
