Femtosecond Visualization of hcp-Iron Strength and Plasticity under Shock Compression

Sebastien Merkel et al.

Summary: Through ultrafast experiments, the plasticity behavior of hexagonal-close-packed iron under extreme loading states was studied. The results show that {101 over bar 2} deformation twinning controls the microstructures of polycrystalline iron at high strain rates and occurs within 1 ns.

Polluted white dwarfs reveal exotic mantle rock types on exoplanets in our solar neighborhood

Keith D. Putirka et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the rock types of exoplanets that once orbited polluted white dwarfs, finding their silicate mantles to be discernable and mostly unique in composition; these exoplanets exhibit compositions that exceed the range of nearby main sequence stars, revealing greater planetary variety in our solar neighborhood.

Modified gravity in the interior of population II stars

Shaswata Chowdhury et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of modified gravity beyond Horndeski theory in the interior of a population II star, finding that reduced gravity may result in decreased luminosity and increased radius of the star, but some effects are reversed near the core. The model provides a constraint on the modified gravity parameter within its limitations.

A possible planet candidate in an external galaxy detected through X-ray transit

Rosanne Di Stefano et al.

Summary: The brightness dip in the extragalactic X-ray binary M51-ULS-1 is well fit by a planet transit model with a Saturn-sized eclipser. Possible orbits for the planet are consistent with its survival in a mass-transfer binary system. This suggests that planetary systems may also exist in external galaxies, and an alternative approach using X-ray temporal behavior can potentially detect them.

Boson stars in Palatini f(R) gravity

Andreu Maso-Ferrando et al.

Summary: In the Palatini formulation of f (R) gravity, equilibrium solutions of spherically symmetric boson stars were explored. The study compared solutions of the quadratic theory f (R) = R + xi R-2 with those in general relativity, showing similar existence curves but significant differences for negative coupling parameters leading to repulsive gravitational components. Introducing self-interactions further emphasized the similarities between f (R) and general relativity, making observational discrimination between the two theories challenging.

Invariant quantities of scalar-tensor theories for stellar structure

Aleksander Kozak et al.

Summary: The translation introduces relativistic hydrostatic equilibrium equations for a wide class of gravitational theories possessing a scalar-tensor representation, showing that the stellar structure equations can be written with respect to the scalar-tensor invariants. This allows for interpreting their physical role.

Antipodal seismic reflections upon shear wave velocity structures within Earth's inner core

Rhett Butler et al.

Summary: Seismic evidence suggests the presence of a high shear wave velocity and an apparent discontinuity around -100 km depth within a portion of Earth's inner core. The research tested over 16 inner core models, indicating a sensitive interface at 100 km depth, and a potential discontinuity around -250 km depth. Other observations suggest a possible solid/solid discontinuity at 100 km depth in certain regions.

Jupiter and jovian exoplanets in Palatini f ((R)over-bar) gravity

Aneta Wojnar

Summary: Palatini f((R) over bar) gravity has been shown to impact certain parts of substellar evolution, such as fragmentation of a gaseous cloud and cooling of Jupiter-like planets. Simple models describing these processes demonstrate differences in opacity mass limit and cooling time of jovian planets in modified gravity.

Metric-affine gravity effects on terrestrial exoplanet profiles

Aleksander Kozak et al.

Summary: The mass-radius relations of homogeneous cold spheres made from six common solid materials found in terrestrial planets are discussed, along with an additional degeneracy in (exo)planet profiles and their properties derived from findings in Palatini f(R) gravity framework. Furthermore, a new test of gravity is proposed where seismic data from earthquakes and marsquakes can be used to test and constrain gravity models.

Cooling process of brown dwarfs in Palatini f(R) gravity

Maria Benito et al.

Summary: The study presents an analytical model for the evolution of brown dwarfs in quadratic Palatini f(R) gravity, improving on previous studies by incorporating a more realistic description of the partially degenerate state and considering the hydrogen metallic-molecular phase transition. The revised cooling process for substellar objects is also addressed in this improved model.
