Simplistic correlations between molecular electronic properties and inhibition efficiencies: Do they really exist?

Anton Kokalj et al.

Summary: Research evaluated the correlation between molecular electronic parameters and experimentally determined corrosion inhibition efficiencies for a set of 24 heterocyclic organic compounds tested as corrosion inhibitors for copper in 3 wt.% NaCl aqueous solution. The study found no noticeable correlation between the molecular electronic descriptors and the inhibition efficiency. It also introduced a new metric called inhibition power for evaluating the performance of corrosion inhibitors.

On the alleged importance of the molecular electron-donating ability and the HOMO-LUMO gap in corrosion inhibition studies

Anton Kokalj

Summary: The hypothesis that inhibition efficiency increases with increasing electron-donating ability is critically reevaluated and shown to have no validity due to the practical limitation of Delta N always being smaller than 3.6. Additionally, a weak volcano-type dependence on the HOMO-LUMO gap for corrosion inhibitors for iron in acidic solutions indicates that a smaller HOMO-LUMO gap does not necessarily correspond to a better inhibitor.

Exploration of Sunflower Oil As a Renewable Biomass Source to Develop Scalable and Highly Effective Corrosion Inhibitors in a 15% HCl Medium at High Temperatures

Abdolreza Farhadian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the feasibility of using sunflower oil to develop highly effective inhibitors for mild steel corrosion in 15% HCl medium. The results show that the sunflower-oil-based corrosion inhibitor (SFOCI) has significant anticorrosion properties, with inhibition efficiencies of 98% and 93% at temperatures of 60 and 80 degrees Celsius, respectively. The mechanism of inhibition is mixed-type with mainly chemisorption onto the surface of mild steel. The study suggests a potential new direction for designing eco-friendly vegetable-oil-based corrosion inhibitors for highly corrosive solutions at high temperatures.

Adsorption and inhibition effect of tetraaza-tetradentate macrocycle ligand and its Ni (II), Cu (II) complexes on the corrosion of Cu10Ni alloy in 3.5% NaCl solutions

K. Shalabi et al.

Summary: In the search for high-performance, effective, and eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors, the macrocyclic compartmental ligand PDHDH and its Ni(II) and Cu(II) complexes were synthesized and characterized. These inhibitors were found to act as mixed-type inhibitors for Cu10Ni alloy corrosion in 3.5% NaCl solutions, with a protection capacity reaching 95.7% at an additive concentration of 100 mu M. The adsorption of the inhibitors on Cu10Ni was determined to follow Freundlich adsorption isotherm and be physisorption, supported by DFT calculations, Fukui indices, Mulliken atomic charges, and MEP mapping.

Summary: The inhibitory action of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and octylphosphonic acid (OPA) on copper and aluminum in NaCl solution was investigated. While MBI was found to be a good inhibitor for copper but not for aluminum, OPA behaved complementarily. Evidence suggested that OPA changed the bonding of MBI on the copper surface, resulting in a thicker and more protective organic film.
