A major quantitative trait locus on chromosome A9, BnaPh1, controls homoeologous recombination in Brassica napus

Erin E. Higgins et al.

Summary: The study identified genetic factors that differentiate newly resynthesised B. napus from established B. napus in their ability to control homoeologous recombination. Three quantitative trait loci (QTL) were identified, with a major QTL on BnaA9 contributing between 32 and 58% of the observed variation in homoeologous recombination in B. napus. The study suggests candidate meiotic genes for manipulation to control this important trait and develop molecular markers for exploiting homoeologous recombination in crops.

Morphological, anatomical and photosynthetic consequences of artificial allopolyploidization in Cucumis

Xiaqing Yu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the phenotypes of a highly self-pollinated synthesized allotetraploid in Cucumis, C. xhytivus, and found that it exhibited parent-of-origin and dosage effects, as well as a divergent biomass allocation strategy compared to its parents. The study contributes novel insights into the varied phenotypic effects of polyploidy and its potential benefits for survival and speciation of novel species.

Genome evolution in Oryza allopolyploids of various ages: Insights into the process of diploidization

Xinhui Zou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the temporal evolutionary dynamics of four Oryza polyploid genomes at both genetic and expression levels, revealing an ongoing diploidization process in the genus. The findings shed light on the genome evolution after allopolyploidy and suggest that expression divergence driven by changes of selective constraint plays a major role in long-term diploidization.

Wild and Cultivated Homoeologous Barley Chromosomes Can Associate and Recombine in Wheat in the Absence of the Ph1 Locus

Summary: The study found that the Ph1 locus does not prevent pairing of homoeologous chromosomes, but can regulate recombination. In the wheat background, homoeologous chromosomes from wild and cultivated barley can associate and recombine during meiosis.

A Hypomorphic Mutant of PHD Domain Protein Male Meiocytes Death 1

Bing Liu et al.

Summary: The mmr1 mutant in Arabidopsis produces a small subpopulation of diploid or polyploid pollen grains as a result of male meiotic restitution. The mutation affects chromosome dynamics during metaphase I and results in incomplete meiotic cytokinesis, leading to abnormal spindle organization and phragmoplast formation during anaphase II and telophase II. The causative mutation in mmr1 was identified in the MMD1/DUET locus on chromosome 1, leading to defects in microtubule organization and cytokinesis.

Evolution of crossover interference enables stable autopolyploidy by ensuring pairwise partner connections in Arabidopsis arenosa

Chris Morgan et al.

Summary: Polyploidy, especially autopolyploidy, plays a significant role in evolutionary change by affecting meiotic crossover patterns. Research shows that established autotetraploid Arabidopsis arenosa exhibits a robust crossover interference mechanism, while the neo-autotetraploid displays defects. This suggests that stable autopolyploid meiosis has evolved a supercharged interference process to simplify crossover patterns and promote bivalent formation.

Genome downsizing after polyploidy: mechanisms, rates and selection pressures

Xiaotong Wang et al.

Summary: The analysis of over 10,000 plant genome sizes suggests that most species have smaller genomes than expected given the incidence of polyploidy in their ancestries. The rate of DNA loss following polyploidy is likely to have been very low, raising the question of how such small DNA losses can be visible to selection and drive genome downsizing. Various hypotheses are explored to explain how selection might favor genome downsizing following polyploidy.

Gradual evolution of allopolyploidy in Arabidopsis suecica

Robin Burns et al.

Summary: Arabidopsis suecica is a natural allotetraploid species formed through hybridization of Arabidopsis thaliana and Arabidopsis arenosa. Despite the lack of major genomic changes, changes in the meiotic machinery and cyto-nuclear processes suggest gradual adaptation to polyploidy. The absence of a genome shock and the presence of upregulation of certain genes in the A. thaliana and A. arenosa subgenomes indicate subsequent evolution in A. suecica.
