Influence of microbial priming and seeding depth on germination and growth of native wildflowers

Daniela Barrera et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of native soil microbes and seeding depth on germination of south Texas native wildflowers. Results showed that the two wildflower species responded differently to seeding depth and microbial wash treatments. While microbial wash treatment increased germination rate in R. columnifera, it did not have an impact on V. encelioides seed germination. This indicates the potential of native soil microbes to enhance seed germination and growth of wildflowers, as well as the importance of specific seeding depth for habitat restoration.

Local adaptation to continuous mowing makes the noxious weed Solanum elaeagnifolium a superweed candidate by improving fitness and defense traits

Jesus Chavana et al.

Summary: The study found that mowing has an impact on weed growth and plant defense traits, which may also cascade into future generations. Mowed plants produced fewer fruits and total seeds, but had higher seed quality and germination rates. Herbivores showed varied feeding preferences on mowed and unmowed seedlings, suggesting potential effects on plant defense mechanisms.
