Foliar and root applications of the rare sugar tagatose control powdery mildew in soilless grown cucumbers

Paola E. Corneo et al.

Summary: This study found that foliar and root applications of the rare sugar tagatose effectively reduced powdery mildew severity and incidence on cucumber plants, especially under conditions of low severity, showing greater effectiveness than the standard chemical treatment. When disease severity increased steadily, combining sulphur with foliar applications of tagatose could effectively reduce powdery mildew incidence. Overall, under high disease pressure, foliar and root applications of tagatose were more effective than the standard chemical treatment, reducing powdery mildew disease incidence and severity.

Rare Sugars: Recent Advances and Their Potential Role in Sustainable Crop Protection

Nikola Mijailovic et al.

Summary: Rare sugars, monosaccharides with limited availability and almost unknown biological functions, have gained attention in research due to the reduction in production costs through industrial processes. Studies have shown that rare sugars have potential applications in both medical and agricultural fields, offering benefits such as promoting sustainable agriculture and development of new pesticides.

Interactions of tagatose with the sugar metabolism are responsible for Phytophthora infestans growth inhibition

Paola Elisa Corneo et al.

Summary: Tagatose is a rare sugar that inhibits the growth of Phytophthora infestans by reprogramming carbohydrate metabolism, with glucose partially attenuating its inhibitory effects and fructose fully impairing its growth inhibition. The interactions of tagatose with common sugar metabolism play a key role in its mode of action against P. infestans growth.

Alterations in Sucrose and Phenylpropanoid Metabolism Affected by BABA-Primed Defense in Postharvest Grapes and the Associated Transcriptional Mechanism

Chunhong Li et al.

Summary: The study found that BABA can induce resistance against Botrytis cinerea in grapes, but might lead to decreased soluble sugar content. VvMYB44 could play a key role in initiating defense responses against fungal pathogens in grape berries.

A review of knowledge on the mechanisms of action of the rare sugar d-tagatose against phytopathogenic oomycetes

Abdessalem Chahed et al.

Summary: d-tagatose is a rare monosaccharide used as a low-calorie sweetener in the food industry, with the ability to inhibit the growth of various microorganisms such as phytopathogenic oomycetes. It has negligible effects on human health and the environment, making it a sustainable product for crop protection. However, its inhibitory effects on certain microorganisms are reversible, highlighting the need for further functional studies to promote its use in agriculture.

The Differential Growth Inhibition of Phytophthora spp. Caused by the Rare Sugar Tagatose Is Associated With Species-Specific Metabolic and Transcriptional Changes

Abdessalem Chahed et al.

Summary: Tagatose has differential inhibitory effects on Phytophthora infestans and P. cinnamomi, leading to distinct metabolic and transcriptional changes. While it negatively affects mycelial growth, sugar content, and amino acid content in P. infestans, it promotes gene expression and maintains normal growth in P. cinnamomi.
