Whole plastomes are not enough: phylogenomic and morphometric exploration at multiple demographic levels o the bee orchid Glade Ophrys sect. Sphegodes

Richard M. Bateman et al.

Summary: The study reveals the complexity of species-level diversity and speciation in the challenging bee orchid genus Ophrys through detailed morphometrics and whole-plastome sequencing. Plastid sequences represent geographic location more strongly than taxonomic assignment, and variation within and among species appears as a continuum. The findings suggest a complex four-dimensional reticulate network of lineages in the Ophrys genus, with localized microevolution that rarely leads to genuine speciation.

Phylogenetic Placement and Phylogeography of Large-Flowered Lotus Species (Leguminosae) Formerly Classified in Dorycnium: Evidence of Pre-Pleistocene Differentiation of Western and Eastern Intraspecific Groups

Tatiana E. Kramina et al.

Summary: The Mediterranean region is a center of species and genetic diversity for many plant groups, which provided a source for the recolonization of temperate Eurasian regions in the Holocene. The study on Lotus sect. Bonjeanea revealed different geographic distribution patterns among the three species and estimated Lotus species divergence to be much older than previously thought, ranging from approximately 15.87 to 19.81 million years ago.
