Effective conspecific communication with aberrant calls in the common cuckoo (Cuculus canorus)

Csaba Moskat et al.

Summary: The common cuckoo is known for its distinctive call to mark territory and deterring intruders. A rare aberrant version of the call did not hinder communication efficiency among male cuckoos, as their responses were mainly influenced by the first note of the call.

Male common cuckoos use a three-note variant of their cu-coo call for duetting with conspecific females

Csaba Moskat et al.

Summary: Duetting is a common form of coordinated acoustic communication in pair-bonded species, allowing for intersexual communication and coordination between female and male individuals. Female cuckoos use sex-specific bubbling calls while male cuckoos use a 3-note variant of their typical calls, with elements in the male's 3-note calls having higher frequency and shorter durations compared to the 2-note calls.

Previously unknown behavior in parasitic cuckoo females: male-like vocalization during migratory activity

Swetlana G. Meshcheryagina et al.

Summary: In the last decade, enigmatic male-like cuckoo calls have been reported in East Asia, possibly produced by CommonxOriental cuckoo male hybrids or Common cuckoo males with gene mutations. This study found that captive Oriental cuckoo females can produce similar male-like calls, shedding light on the evolution of vocal communication in avian brood parasites. Additionally, the calls exhibited a combination of closed-mouth and open-mouth vocal behaviors, which is unusual among birds.
