The strategy of endogenization in evolutionary biology

Samir Okasha

Summary: Evolutionary biology is remarkable in its ability to explain a wide range of phenomena through a few general theoretical principles. This article explores the strategy of endogenization, where biological features are integrated into evolutionary explanations, moving closer to the ideal of explaining as much as possible from evolutionary first principles.

What are the major transitions?

Matthew D. Herron

Summary: The suggestion to modify the "Major Transitions in Evolution" framework by defining major transitions as events and processes that result in the emergence of a new population of evolutionary individuals is proposed. Excluding events and processes that do not meet this criterion, while including those that have generally been neglected, could lead to a more philosophically coherent category and increase the sample size for inferring trends and general principles common to all Major Transitions in Evolution.

Major Evolutionary Transitions and the Roles of Facilitation and Information in Ecosystem Transformations

Amanda N. Robin et al.

Summary: The paper discusses a few major evolutionary transitions (METs) and how they are related to ecology, introducing the concepts of Major System Transitions (MSTs), Major Competitive Transitions (MCTs), and Facilitating Evolutionary Transitions (FETs). It also explores the different levels of transitions involving information in MSTs and suggests that understanding past major transitions can illuminate current events and potential future possibilities created by abiotically-generated information.
