Fish community and abundance response to improved connectivity and more natural hydromorphology in a post-industrial subcatchment

Jingrui Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of subcatchment-scale connectivity restoration on fish communities in a tributary of the River Wear in Northeast England. It found that the restoration efforts benefited most native fish species, but Atlantic salmon did not reappear, indicating a potential time lag for ecological benefits to fully develop. Further well-controlled long-term studies are encouraged to assess the outcomes of large-scale connectivity restoration in rivers with multiple barriers.

Rapid response of fish and aquatic habitat to removal of a tidal barrier

Jingrui Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of tidal barrier removal on fish, macroinvertebrates, and habitats in an English coastal stream. The results show that removal of the barrier led to increased habitat diversity and fish density upstream, with transient changes in macroinvertebrate communities. The study also found that European eel density significantly increased after barrier removal.
