Oxytocin receptor gene (OXTR) DNA methylation is associated with autism and related social traits-A systematic review

Matthijs Moerkerke et al.

Summary: The study found that DNA methylation of the oxytocin receptor gene is associated with autism traits and social anxiety, with hypermethylation possibly linked to higher autism characteristics in adults and hypomethylation associated with children with ASD and increased social anxiety. Further research is needed to confirm these initial findings and understand the underlying mechanisms.

Changes in endogenous oxytocin levels after intranasal oxytocin treatment in adult men with autism: An exploratory study with long-term follow-up

Kaat Alaerts et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that intranasal administration of OT can reliably increase endogenous salivary OT levels, particularly at the four-week follow-up after treatment cessation. Individuals with larger behavioral improvements in ASD social symptoms show more pronounced increases in salivary OT levels.
