Mechanism and implications of upwelling from the Late Ordovician to early Silurian in the Yangtze region, South China

Shengchao Yang et al.

Summary: Studies have found widespread oceanic upwelling in the Yangtze region during the Late Ordovician to early Silurian transition, possibly driven by glacially-influenced temperature differences between the poles and equator and longshore trade winds. This upwelling event may have led to organic matter accumulation in South China and could be considered a geological indicator of Late Ordovician glaciation and the Boda warm Event prior to the Hirnantian cooling.

Redox changes in the outer Yangtze Sea (South China) through the Hirnantian Glaciation and their implications for the end-Ordovician biocrisis

Na Li et al.

Summary: During the Late Ordovician mass extinction, two pulses of faunal mortality occurred as a result of expanded marine euxinia, affecting both inner and outer Yangtze Sea. The less-studied outer Yangtze Sea sections show changes in marine redox conditions, chemical weathering rates, and primary productivity. The contraction and expansion of oceanic euxinia in response to continental weathering intensity and sulfate availability played a significant role in shaping marine redox variations and influencing the biotic crisis during this time period.

Origin and paleoenvironment of organic matter in the Wufeng-Longmaxi shales in the northeastern Sichuan basin

Chaoyong Wang et al.

Summary: The origin and preservation environment of sedimentary organic matter play a crucial role in the accumulation of shale gas. The study revealed that planktonic algae were the main source of organic matter in black shales, and variations in redox conditions and paleoproductivity levels influenced the enrichment of sedimentary organic matter in different formations.

Constraints of biomethane generation yield and carbon isotope fractionation effect in the pathway of acetotrophic with different coal-rank coals

Yuan Bao et al.

Summary: The study found that different ranks of coal can be degraded by microorganisms to produce biomethane, with biomethane production being mainly influenced by maceral content. The generation processes of methane and carbon dioxide exhibit three-phase characteristics, and the carbon isotope composition of biodegraded coal is lighter than that of raw coal.

Geochemical characteristics of organic carbon and pyrite sulfur in Ordovician-Silurian transition shales in the Yangtze Platform, South China: Implications for the depositional environment

Zhaodong Xi et al.

Summary: This study on the O-S transition sedimentary environments of China's Upper Yangtze Platform reveals the evolution process driven by global climate change and tectonism, impacting organic carbon content and thickness of shale gas targets. The findings indicate the significant role of these factors in shale gas exploration risks in the region.
