Oligocene Ailanthus from northwestern Qaidam Basin, northern Tibetan Plateau, China and its implications

Tao Yang et al.

Summary: This study reports the fossil fruits and foliage of Simaroubaceae plants found in the Qaidam Basin in Qinghai Province, representing the first record of this plant family in the northern Tibetan Plateau. Based on the climate requirements of the extant A. altissima, the results indicate that the climate conditions in the Early Oligocene were much warmer and more humid compared to the current climate at the fossil site.

Salinity-controlled isomerization of lacustrine brGDGTs impacts the associated MBT5ME terrestrial temperature index

Huanye Wang et al.

Summary: It has been found that the relative abundance of 5-methyl brGDGTs in sediments is strongly controlled by salinity, which can be used to trace past lake water salinity. The isomerization of brGDGTs controlled by salinity may significantly impact the MBT5ME paleothermometer, potentially leading to an overestimation of past temperature, but the temperature signal can be extracted after correcting the salinity effect. This finding could facilitate the retrieval of reliable temperature and salinity records in lacustrine settings.

Expanded lacustrine sedimentation in the Qaidam Basin on the northern Tibetan Plateau: Manifestation of climatic wetting during the Oligocene icehouse

Minghao Wu et al.

Summary: This study reconstructs a long-term compound-specific hydrogen isotope record from sedimentary leaf wax n-alkanes in the Qaidam Basin, revealing shifts in aridity and wetness at ca. 40 Ma, 34 Ma, and 24 Ma. The results suggest contrasting patterns in paleohydrology conditions since the Eocene-Oligocene transition, highlighting different climatic responses to global cooling in the region. Wetting in Inner Asia is synchronous with cooling in the North Atlantic and Xining Basin, while the subtropical high re-occupying Inner Asia causes aridity during the late Oligocene to early Miocene.
