Shale pore connectivity and influencing factors based on spontaneous imbibition combined with a nuclear magnetic resonance experiment

Xuejun Wang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that microscale pore connectivity is the most prominent, followed by mesoscale and macroscale pores (or bedding fractures or microfractures); moreover, water-wet pore connectivity is superior to oil-wet pore connectivity. Oil imbibition slope is negatively correlated with production index (PI), positively correlated with Tmax (reflecting organic matter maturity) and calcite content, and not significantly correlated with total organic carbon (TOC) content or other mineral contents.

Permeability, mineral and pore characteristics of coals response to acid treatment by NMR and QEMSCAN: Insights into acid sensitivity mechanism

Zhengshuai Liu et al.

Summary: The sensitivity of the coal reservoir to acids can impact the production of coalbed methane. Core flooding experiments with acid treatments were conducted to investigate the mechanism, revealing permeability damage and changes in mineral distribution and pore structure. The dissolution of minerals, generation of new precipitates, and migration of particles were observed during the experiments.

Quartz types, silica sources and their implications for porosity evolution and rock mechanics in the Paleozoic Longmaxi Formation shale, Sichuan Basin

Hao Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of various forms and sources of quartz on the porosity evolution and rock mechanics of shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin. Different types of quartz were identified, along with their associated pores, with biogenic silica playing a substantial role in total silica content. The origin of quartz was found to be significant in understanding porosity evolution and rock mechanics, with biogenic silica being a major contributor to brittleness in the lower Longmaxi Formation.

A new application of atomic force microscopy in the characterization of pore structure and pore contribution in shale gas reservoirs

Shangbin Chen et al.

Summary: Diverse materials play a crucial role in determining the pore structure of shale gas accumulation. This study conducted AFM and LT-N2GA experiments on shale samples from the Longmaxi Formation in the Sichuan Basin to analyze the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the surface properties and pore structures. The results revealed significant differences in material composition between organic-rich and organic-poor shales, with the former having more pores and complicated pore boundaries.
