The competition between fracture nucleation, propagation, and coalescence in dry and water-saturated crystalline rock

Jessica A. McBeck et al.

Summary: During the development of fracture networks in crystalline rock, three modes of fracture growth – nucleation, isolated propagation, and coalescence – lead to distinctive geometric attributes that control permeability and fluid-rock interactions. Experiments show that the growth of preexisting fractures dominates the nucleation of new fractures, while fracture propagation has a greater influence on fracture networks than coalescence.

Experimental Study on Damage and Fracture Characteristics of Beishan Granite Subjected to High-temperature Treatment with DIC and AE Techniques

Shuting Miao et al.

Summary: The study examines the physical and mechanical characteristics as well as fracturing behavior of Beishan granite under high temperatures up to 800 degrees C. Results show varying responses of the granite to temperature, with a critical temperature for brittle-ductile transition between 500 and 600 degrees C. The evolution of damage and fracture mechanism in heated granite is investigated through a combination of AE and DIC techniques.
