Genomic Analysis of Antimicrobial Resistance and Resistance Plasmids in Salmonella Serovars from Poultry in Nigeria

Abdurrahman Hassan Jibril et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance is a global public health concern, and this study focused on identifying antimicrobial resistance and resistance genes in Salmonella isolates from poultry in Nigeria. Phenotypic resistance to commonly used antibiotics was observed, with corresponding antibiotic resistance genes detected in genomes, often carried on specific plasmids. Some Salmonella strains carried multidrug resistance genes, indicating potential for resistance.

Whole-Genome Sequencing Reveals the Presence of the blaCTX-M-65 Gene in Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing and Multi-Drug-Resistant Clones of Salmonella Serovar Infantis Isolated from Broiler Chicken Environments in the Galapagos Islands

Elton Burnett et al.

Summary: Four multi-drug resistant S. Infantis strains recovered from the poultry house environments in Santa Cruz Island of the Galapagos show extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) resistance and reduced fluoroquinolone susceptibility. Whole-genome sequencing revealed the presence of the ESBL-conferring bla(CTX-M-65) gene in an IncFIB-like plasmid in three S. Infantis isolates, which are closely related to clinical and veterinary S. Infantis isolates from the United States and Latin America. Phylogenetic analysis inferred close relatedness between the S. Infantis isolates from Galapagos and the United States, highlighting the need for increased monitoring and surveillance programs to determine prevalence, sources, and reservoirs of MDR pathogens.

Prevalence and Molecular Characterization of Salmonella Isolated from Broiler Farms at the Tolima Region-Colombia

Roy Rodriguez-Hernandez et al.

Summary: Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen that affects animals and humans worldwide. The prevalence of Salmonella in broiler farms was 26.67%, with all isolates belonging to the serovar Salmonella Paratyphi B. The presence of Salmonella Paratyphi B in the poultry chain in the Tolima region highlights the need for further studies to identify its main source.

Genomic Investigation of Salmonella Isolates Recovered From a Pig Slaughtering Process in Hangzhou, China

Beibei Wu et al.

Summary: This study conducted in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, revealed the presence of multidrug-resistant Salmonella in the pig slaughtering process, with the dehairing area and splitting area being the most contaminated areas. These findings emphasize the importance of enhancing management practices to control critical points, while also highlighting the urgent need for implementing whole genome sequencing to monitor the emergence of virulent and multidrug-resistant clones.

Discerning the Antimicrobial Resistance, Virulence, and Phylogenetic Relatedness of Salmonella Isolates Across the Human, Poultry, and Food Materials Sources in Malaysia

Zunita Zakaria et al.

Summary: Whole-genome sequencing was used to determine antimicrobial resistance patterns and virulence gene profiles of 82 Salmonella Enteritidis strains isolated in Peninsular Malaysia over 3 years. Results showed common genetic traits among isolates from humans, poultry, and food, indicating the need for measures to control the spread of resistant pathogens.

Genomic Investigation of Antimicrobial-Resistant Salmonella enterica Isolates From Dead Chick Embryos in China

Mohammed Elbediwi et al.

Summary: This study revealed the presence of antimicrobial-resistant S. enterica in breeding chicken hatcheries in Henan province, with S. Enteritidis being the most common serovar and carrying more virulence factors. There is a strong correlation between different antimicrobial-resistant genes, and the type of plasmids also has an impact on resistance.

Global Genomic Characterization of Salmonella enterica Serovar Telelkebir

Yu-feng Qiu et al.

Summary: Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) is a common cause of gastroenteritis, with the invasive infection caused by an infrequently reported serovar Telelkebir strain FJ001 in China carrying antimicrobial-resistant and typhoidtoxin genes. Genomic investigation revealed a high relatedness among global S. Telelkebir isolates, suggesting potential rapid transmissions through international travels. This study highlights the importance of surveillance and understanding the threat posed by the unique combination of virulent and antimicrobial-resistant determinants in NTS infections.
