Optimizing CNT Loading in Antimicrobial Composites for Urinary Tract Application

Marisa Gomes et al.

Summary: Carbon nanotube composites prepared in this study have the potential for designing urinary tract devices with inherent antibiofilm activity. Various methods have been implemented to prevent or reduce biofilm formation on indwelling urinary devices. By filling the PDMS matrix with 3 wt% CNT loading, a significant reduction in cell culturability can be achieved.

Development of Chitosan-Based Surfaces to Prevent Single- and Dual-Species Biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Marta Lima et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of chitosan-based surfaces of different molecular weights in inhibiting bacterial biofilm formation, demonstrating their ability to effectively reduce biofilm formation. Chitosan-based surfaces showed a decreased biofilm volume and thickness compared to polylactic acid. Therefore, low molecular weight chitosan holds potential for coating polymeric devices like implantable medical devices in reducing biofilm formation.

A Novel Device-Integrated Drug Delivery System for Local Inhibition of Urinary Tract Infection

Kristian Staerk et al.

Summary: The study developed a novel antimicrobial catheter concept using a silicone-based interpenetrating polymer network for slow-release prophylaxis of antibacterial agents in the urinary bladder. The IPN catheter group showed undetectable uropathogenic Escherichia coli in the bladder, while the BIP catheters reduced catheter biofilm formation significantly compared to the control group. The IPN-catheter concept provides a promising delivery route for local treatment in the urinary tract.

Effect of Lactobacillus plantarum Biofilms on the Adhesion of Escherichia coli to Urinary Tract Devices

Fabio M. Carvalho et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of Lactobacillus plantarum biofilms on Escherichia coli adhesion to medical-grade silicone, finding significant reductions in E. coli culturability. Analysis with CLSM and contact angle measurements indicated that L. plantarum cells have the potential to be used as antibiofilm agents for urinary tract applications.

Targeting biofilms in medical devices using probiotic cells: a systematic

M. Fabio Carvalho et al.

Summary: Probiotic cells show potential as biocontrol agents against a variety of microorganisms responsible for biofilm formation, with certain strains like Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, and Streptococcus demonstrating high efficacy in hindering biofilm growth. Further research is warranted to explore the clinical applications of probiotic cells in preventing and treating medical device-associated infections.
