Colonization resistance: metabolic warfare as a strategy against pathogenic Enterobacteriaceae

Nicolas G. Shealy et al.

Summary: The intestine is a complex bacterial ecosystem that provides immune education, nutrition, and protection against pathogens. Symbiotic interactions between the host and microbiome occur through metabolic crosstalk, with microbiota inhibiting pathogen colonization through diverse metabolic pathways, while pathogens disrupt the microbiome to gain a metabolic advantage. This review discusses the role of microbiota metabolites in colonization resistance and the metabolic mechanisms used by pathogens to outcompete commensal microbes.

Unearthing Antibiotic Resistance Associated with Disturbance-Induced Permafrost Thaw in Interior Alaska

Tracie J. Haan et al.

Summary: Monitoring antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) across ecological niches is critical for assessing the impacts distinct microbial communities have on the global spread of resistance. In permafrost-associated soils, climate and human driven disturbances augment near-surface thaw shifting the predominant bacteria that shape the resistome in overlying active layer soils. This thaw is of concern in Alaska, because 85% of land is underlain by permafrost, making soils especially vulnerable to disturbances. The study aims to assess how soil disturbance, and the subsequent shift in community composition, will affect the types, abundance, and mobility of ARGs that compose the active layer resistome.

Effects of sepsis and its treatment measures on intestinal flora structure in critical care patients

Xiao-Juan Yang et al.

Summary: Through studying the intestinal flora of sepsis patients and non-sepsis patients, it was found that sepsis patients have reduced intestinal flora diversity and significant changes in flora structure, with Firmicutes as the dominant phylum and decreased proportions of Bacteroidetes, Prevotella, and Lachnospira, among others. Additionally, the proportion of Enterococcus was significantly increased in the intestines of sepsis patients.

Impact of non-antibiotic drugs on the human intestinal microbiome

Quentin Le Bastard et al.

Summary: The gut microbiota, composed of trillions of microbial cells and viruses, is influenced by factors such as age, diet, diseases, and medications. This review focuses on the impact of four widely prescribed non-antibiotic drugs: Proton-pump inhibitors, metformin, statins, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Studies using culture-independent molecular techniques have shown that the taxonomical signature associated with non-antibiotic drugs can alter the intestinal microbiome, potentially leading to dysbiosis and related side effects.

Repositioning of non-antibiotic drugs as an alternative to microbial resistance: a systematic review

Vitoria S. Foletto et al.

Summary: Drug repositioning has become an attractive alternative for treating infections caused by multidrug resistant microorganisms due to the global spread of microbial resistance and challenges in discovering new antibiotics. Various non-antibiotic drugs have shown significant antimicrobial activity, especially when combined with antibacterials, and the presence of aromatic rings in the molecular structure contributes to this activity. This review highlights the potential repositioning of non-antibiotic drugs as promising candidates for treating severe bacterial infections caused by extensively resistant bacteria.

The effect of intestinal microbiota dysbiosis on growth and detection of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales within an in vitro gut model

H. C. Harris et al.

Summary: Detection of CPE colonization in the gut is challenging, as antibiotic exposure disrupts microbiota populations and allows CPE proliferation. Different screening assays perform variably in detecting different CPE strains within intact or disrupted microbiota.

Gut microbiome heritability is nearly universal but environmentally contingent

Laura Grieneisen et al.

Summary: Analysis of 16,234 gut microbiome profiles from 585 wild baboons collected over 14 years revealed that host genetic effects on the gut microbiome are nearly universal. The study found that 97% of microbiome phenotypes were significantly heritable, with heritability being greater in the dry season, with low diet diversity, and in older hosts. These findings suggest the potential for selection on microbiome characteristics as a host phenotype.

Effect of Diet and Dietary Components on the Composition of the Gut Microbiota

Ashley Beam et al.

Summary: This review explores the impact of different diets on the gut microbiota composition, finding that specific dietary components in plant-based and Mediterranean diets can influence microbial composition and bacterial metabolites, which in turn affect systemic inflammation and metabolic endotoxemia. These associations between diet/dietary components and altering bacterial composition may provide potential therapeutic targets for type II diabetes, obesity, and inflammatory diseases.

Effects of Antibiotic Treatment with Piperacillin/Tazobactam versus Ceftriaxone on the Composition of the Murine Gut Microbiota

Carola Venturini et al.

Summary: The study found that different antibiotics have a significant impact on the gut microbiota of mice, with third-generation cephalosporins causing more severe dysbiosis. Even after the antibiotics are stopped, the gut of mice remains highly susceptible to colonization by antibiotic-resistant enterobacterial pathogens. Co-habitation of untreated mice with treated mice can mitigate the dysbiosis caused by treatment.
