Presence and Transfer of Antimicrobial Resistance Determinants inEscherichia coliin Pigs, Pork, and Humans in Thailand and Lao PDR Border Provinces

Chanika Pungpian et al.

Summary: The study revealed common antimicrobial resistance in pig-origin Escherichia coli and humans in border provinces of Thailand and Lao PDR, with a high prevalence of multidrug resistance. Resistance genes like aadA1 and ESBL genes like bla(CTX-M55) were frequently found. Collaboration in research and policy between sectors is essential to address the issue of AMR effectively.

Attention to the Tripartite's one health measures in national action plans on antimicrobial resistance

Louise Munkholm et al.

Summary: The study found that almost all AMR NAPs address the three key sectors of One Health, with OH measures primarily applied in policies related to human health care, food production, hygiene, and agriculture. However, the level of attention to OH measures is generally low in sanitation, aquaculture, waste management, and water governance, especially in NAPs from high-income countries.

Antimicrobial use and resistance data in human and animal sectors in the Lao PDR: evidence to inform policy

Vilada Chansamouth et al.

Summary: The scientific evidence base on antimicrobial use and resistance in human and animal sectors in Laos is relatively low, providing an opportunity for the country to act quickly to implement strategies to protect the population. Urgent interventions are needed to roll out new guidelines, reduce antibiotic use without prescriptions, enhance surveillance, and improve understanding of antimicrobial use and resistance.

The European Union Summary Report on Antimicrobial Resistance in zoonotic and indicator bacteria from humans, animals and food in 2018/2019

Summary: Data on antimicrobial resistance in humans, animals, and food are collected annually by EU Member States, jointly analysed by EFSA and ECDC, and reported in a yearly EU Summary Report. The monitoring in 2018 focused on poultry and their derived products, while the monitoring in 2019 specifically targeted pigs, calves, and their derived products.

Understanding the veterinary antibiotics supply chain to address antimicrobial resistance in Lao PDR: Roles and interactions of involved stakeholders

M. Poupaud et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the impact of new regulations on the sale, distribution, and use of veterinary antibiotics in Lao PDR, by analyzing stakeholders in the veterinary antibiotics supply chain using qualitative and quantitative methods. The challenges posed by the lack of interaction between veterinarians and farmers, as well as the evolving nature of the supply chain, were highlighted.

Colistin Resistance and ESBL Production in Salmonella and Escherichia coli from Pigs and Pork in the Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Myanmar Border Area

Khin Khin Lay et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic characteristics of ESBL-producing and colistin-resistant Salmonella and Escherichia coli from pigs and pork in the border area among Thailand, Cambodia, Lao PDR, and Myanmar. The results revealed that pigs and pork serve as carriers of colistin and new generation cephalosporins resistance, with E. coli showing a significantly higher colistin-resistance rate compared to Salmonella, and Cambodia being the predominant location for Salmonella. Genes associated with colistin/cephalosporin resistance were detected in some bacterial isolates.

Antimicrobial Resistance Pilot Surveillance of Pigs and Chickens in Vietnam, 2017-2019

C. Tuat et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial use and resistance pose a growing threat in Vietnamese livestock, with high levels of resistance observed in E. coli and NTS isolates, particularly multidrug resistance. Chicken isolates showed higher resistance levels across all antimicrobial classes compared to pig isolates. Increased levels of multidrug resistant NTS in southern provinces highlight the need for enhanced surveillance and intervention strategies in this region.
