Antimicrobial Resistance Genes and Diversity of Clones among ESBL- and Acquired AmpC-Producing Escherichia coli Isolated from Fecal Samples of Healthy and Sick Cats in Portugal

Isabel Carvalho et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the resistance mechanisms in ESBL- and qAmpC-producing E. coli isolates from healthy and sick cats in Portugal. The research revealed the presence of diverse ESBL-producing E. coli variants, mainly belonging to the CTX-M group 1, in cats, emphasizing a potential public health concern due to the close contact between cats and humans.

Carbapenemase IncF-borne blaNDM-5 gene in the E. coli ST167 high-risk clone from canine clinical infection, Italy

Patricia Alba et al.

Summary: The blaNDM-5-producing E. coli ST167 high-risk clone is emerging globally in human clinical cases, but has only been sporadically found in companion animals and has not been described in Italy. The sequence analysis revealed that the plasmid pMOL008 carrying blaNDM-5 is nearly identical to those found in human clinical cases in Italy and in colonized humans and a dog in Switzerland. The presence of carbapenem-resistance genes in the plasmid poses a public health threat and underscores the importance of the One Health approach for antimicrobial resistance surveillance.

Antimicrobial Resistance Genes and Diversity of Clones among Faecal ESBL-Producing Escherichia coli Isolated from Healthy and Sick Dogs Living in Portugal

Isabel Carvalho et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the prevalence and genetic characteristics of ESBL and acquired-AmpC producing Escherichia coli isolates from healthy and sick dogs in Portugal. The results showed different bla(CTX-M) genes variants among ESBL-producers, as well as the presence of CMY-2 beta-lactamase in some isolates. Dogs were found to be carriers of ESBL and/or qAmpC-producing E. coli, with a potential zoonotic role.

Global prevalence and molecular characterization of extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing-Escherichia coli in dogs and cats - A scoping review and meta-analysis

Marilia Salgado-Caxito et al.

Summary: The prevalence of ESBL-E. coli varied across continents, with a range from 0.63% (Oceania) to 16.56% (Africa) in dogs and from 0% (Oceania) to 16.82% (Asia) in cats. Despite more studies on dogs than on cats, the global prevalence of ESBL-E. coli showed no significant difference between the two species. Numerous ESBL genes and sequence types were found in companion animals, with widespread presence of CTX-M-15 and SHV-12 encoding ESBL-E. coli strains. Further investigation is needed to understand the drivers influencing ESBL-E. coli prevalence and its clinical relevance in veterinary medicine and public health, as well as the economic impact of ESBL-E. coli infections among companion animals.
