Control of postharvest grey spot rot of loquat fruit with Metschnikowia pulcherrima E1 and potential mechanisms of action

Huihui Yang et al.

Summary: In the present study, the biocontrol efficacy of Metschnikowia pulcherrima E1 against grey spot rot on loquat fruits was evaluated. The yeast reduced decay incidence and lesion diameter, colonized wounds on fruit surfaces, inhibited pathogenic fungi invasion, competed for nutrients, and produced volatile antifungal compounds. Additionally, M. pulcherrima E1 induced defense-related enzyme activity in loquat fruit, showing potential as a biocontrol agent against postharvest grey spot rot.

Inhibitory effects of non-volatiles lipopeptides and volatiles ketones metabolites secreted by Bacillus velezensis C16 against Alternaria solani

Dai Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified Bacillus velezensis C16 as a strain with strong antifungal activity against early blight pathogen Alternaria solani. The non-volatile lipopeptides and volatile organic compounds produced by C16 showed significant antagonistic activities on A. solani, leading to structural destruction of hyphae and inhibited conidia germination. High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed iturins and volatile compounds of C16 exhibit strong antagonistic activity on mycelia, suggesting a synergistic effect to resist early blight in potato.

Effects of temperature and relative humidity on Aflatoxin B1 reduction in corn grains and antagonistic activities against Aflatoxin-producing Aspergillus flavus by a volatile organic compound-producing yeast, Kwoniella heveanensis DMKU-CE82

Sopin Jaibangyang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the yeast strain K. heveanensis DMKU-CE82 can effectively reduce Aflatoxin B1 in corn grains through the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Under most storage conditions at 35°C, the VOCs produced by this yeast strain can reduce AFB1 to less than 20 ppb. Additionally, this yeast strain exhibits various bioactivities such as producing enzymes and antibiotics.

Screening of a broad-spectrum antagonist-Bacillus siamensis, and its possible mechanisms to control postharvest disease in tropical fruits

Wenjing You et al.

Summary: The study investigated the biological control capability and action mechanisms of the broad-spectrum antagonist Bacillus siamensis (B. siamensis) in postharvest tropical fruits. Results showed that B. siamensis exhibited significant inhibition to tested fungi through the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), lytic enzymes, and possibly surfactin lipopeptide. In vivo, B. siamensis effectively suppressed diseases and browning of tropical fruits, maintaining their physiological qualities during storage. These findings indicate the great biocontrol potential of B. siamensis in controlling postharvest diseases in tropical fruits.

Early detection and monitoring for Aspergillus flavus contamination in maize kernels

Hongbo Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the changes of volatile organic compounds in maize kernels caused by Aspergillus flavus contamination using headspace-gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry. Specific biomarkers were identified, and potential targets for developing sensors to detect early mold contamination in stored maize kernels were provided. Aflatoxin B1 showed positive correlations with certain VOCs, suggesting their potential use in monitoring A. flavus contamination.

Biocontrol potential of a broad-spectrum antifungal strain Bacillus amyloliquefaciens B4 for postharvest loquat fruit storage

Wan-Qiong Ye et al.

Summary: Bacillus amyloliquefaciens B4 is a promising biological agent for controlling postharvest diseases of loquat fruit. It shows broad-spectrum antifungal activity and is non-toxic in oral toxicity tests, making it a suitable biocontrol agent. Treatment with B4 results in lower disease incidence compared to untreated fruit.

Summary: The study demonstrates the great potential of cumin essential oil in preventing Aspergillus flavus contamination, with cuminaldehyde as the predominant component that significantly inhibits the growth of A. flavus and biosynthesis of AFB1. By down-regulating the expression of genes involved in ergosterol and AFB1 synthesis pathways, cuminaldehyde effectively prevents fungal contamination.

Summary: The study demonstrated that rPINB has antifungal properties against A. flavus spores, inhibiting toxin production on maize. It showed dose-dependent inhibition of spore germination and growth in vitro, altering spore morphology and damaging the cell wall and membrane. The observed direct antifungal activity of rPINB suggests its potential use in preventing fungal contamination of stored foods and agricultural products in the future.
