Modeling the role of riverine organic matter in hypoxia formation within the coastal transition zone off the Pearl River Estuary

Liuqian Yu et al.

Summary: This study found that the nutrients released from river-delivered terrestrial organic matter (OM(terr)) play an important role in promoting hypoxia formation in coastal areas indirectly, with their longer residence time than sinking organic matter contributing to oxygen depletion downstream. Reducing both nutrient and OM(terr)loads is crucial for mitigating hypoxia in the upstream region, while reducing nutrient load alone is more effective for mitigating hypoxia in the downstream.
