Isotopic techniques in aquaculture nutrition: State of the art and future perspectives

Julian Gamboa-Delgado

Summary: Animal nutrition studies rely on a combination of traditional and advanced analytical techniques to enhance our understanding of the nutritional physiology of valuable species, particularly in the field of aquaculture. Stable isotope analysis has been instrumental in determining the specific dietary components that are digested, incorporated into tissues, and utilized for metabolic functions.

Meta-analysis of the use of seaweeds and their extracts as immunostimulants for fish: a systematic review

Valentin Thepot et al.

Summary: Seaweeds are a potential source of unique immunostimulants for enhancing the health and growth of farmed fish, with significant positive impacts on fish immunity, stress resistance, and growth demonstrated in the study. However, considerable variations among studies and between fish and seaweed species make it challenging to extrapolate the results beyond individual experiments.

Biosynthesis and Isotopic Routing of Dietary Protein by Sea Cucumber Apostichopus japonicus (Selenka): Evidence from Compound-Specific Carbon Stable Isotope Analysis

Dongxue Xu et al.

Summary: Juvenile sea cucumbers were fed different microalgae in a 130-day experiment, leading to varying growth rates and amino acid compositions. Analysis of carbon isotopes showed fluctuations in specific amino acids. The study sheds light on the metabolism routing and nutrient utilization in sea cucumbers during their juvenile stage.

Future feed control - Tracing banned bovine material in insect meal

I Belghit et al.

Summary: The study showed that various molecular analysis methods can detect prohibited bovine material in insects reared for processed animal protein production, but each method has its limitations. A combination of complementary molecular analysis approaches is recommended for accurate detection of prohibited material in the feed chain. Additional efforts are needed to expand the available battery of detection approaches with mass spectrometry techniques and potentially delta C-13(AA) fingerprinting.

Intrataxonomic trends in herbivore enamel δ13C are decoupled from ecosystem woody cover

Joshua R. Robinson et al.

Summary: By combining a large dataset of δ13C enamel data with estimates of woody cover in 30 African ecosystems, the study shows little correlation between intrataxonomic variation in δ13C enamel and vegetation structure. Therefore, the authors recommend a community-level approach for making vegetation inferences.

Summary: Proxies such as amino acid content can track sources and degradation processes of organic carbon in lakes, especially in eutrophic lakes. Parameters failed to describe degradation in the most oligotrophic lake due to very low organic carbon and nitrogen content in the sediment.

Liver alanine catabolism promotes skeletal muscle atrophy and hyperglycaemia in type 2 diabetes

Juergen G. Okun et al.

Summary: Elevated hepatic alanine catabolism promotes hyperglycaemia and reduces skeletal muscle protein synthesis, linking sarcopenia with hyperglycaemia in type 2 diabetes. Obesity and sarcopenia are often associated in aging and may together contribute to the progression of conditions such as diabetes and frailty. Liver alanine metabolism driven by chronic glucocorticoid and glucagon signaling promotes hyperglycaemia and skeletal muscle wasting, revealing a metabolic inter-tissue cross-talk in type 2 diabetes.
